I do not get it. Last night I went to the "red carpet" to watch the kids from my son's class go to prom. OMG I saw gowns that were beyond descripition. While I do not have a daughter I cannot in my wildest dreams see how parents can let their girls leave the house dressed with less clothing than a Las Vegas Showgirl (I am being kind, I cannot use the word I would like b/c they will ban me).

I saw this girl with a dress with just these straps going up over the bodice would make Jlo blush. Kind of like wide suspenders. Then there was this girl who looked as if she had not zipped her dress at the waist the rest of the dress was open. When I looked more closely it was a huge v and the top of her rear end was showing if you know what I mean. As she went up the carpet she pulled it lower!!
Some of them used glue and double stick tape to hold the dresses in place but some of them did not. Either way would you let you daughter of age 15-18 leave the house like this?? Really...forget about not buying the cow....these girls were exhibiting the whole dairy farm...if you get my drift.

It is known as parents too spineless to say no. As a teacher I see it all the time.

I have seen some of the pics my friends have shown me of their kid's prom. :sad2: It will be a cold, cold day in hell before a daughter of mine dresses that way unless she wants my DH to be her prom date. :teeth:

At my kids school a dress code for Prom is strictly enforced. I have never seen anything like you described!

Its fortunate that my daughters have better taste than that because no, they would never be allowed to leave the house like that.

It's called the "Whatever Princess wants, Princess gets" syndrome.

My daughter is very modest (dunno where she gets it from!) she is always pointing out 'hooochie mamas' at the Mall saying she would never dress like that.

We are going on a cruise soon that is 10 days with 2 formal nights, I took her out over the weekend to look for 2 gowns, she has such nice taste refusing to try some dresses altogether, she picked two really beautiful dresses, I'm really proud of her.

Well this will blow your mind re prom even more. In my son's limo was a girl he did not know her date asked my my husband (via my son) if he could drive her home b/c the boy was walking home and not in her direction and he did not want to have her walk home alone!! It was a 20min walk AND she had to go right by this drug/alcohol rehab that always has a ton of sleezy looking guys sitting on the steps! My husband said when he got to the house the lights were not even on!! Can you believe it? Granted they were from another country and maybe not used to our customs but jeeze don't they care what happens to their kids? Not to even wait up and see if she had a good time etc. I live in a fairly large city near Boston and while not crime ridden it is getting pretty tough. I would not let my SON walk home who the heck could let thier daughter. Even if I did not have a car I would WALK her home myself!!

I'm the mom who usually ends up doing the driving home. and I wait until whoever I drive home actually gets inot their house before I leave.

last night my 15 yrar old went to the movies with a boy. he lives around the corner from the theater, literally a 2 minute walk.

it was just before midnight when the movie ended and I went to pick up my dd. it was pouring rain and she asked me to drive the boy home.

I would have done it even if it wasn't raining.

Me too! But jeeze what are these parents thinking?? Don't they worry? Don't they care? I do not mind taking kids home and frankly I would prefer to be the one who drives cause there have been times where my child was driven home and I smelled alcohol on the breath of the parent. Sure it might just have been one drink but I don't choose to find out what the blood alcohol content was...but really I just do not get these parents who just let their kids run wild and do not care either clothes wise or saftey wise what happens to them.

I think some of those parents rely on parents like us...

sand I know what you mean...my older dd has a friend whose parents are divorced and the father is an alcoholic...spent a night in the drunk tank recently. if the firend's mom is driving, my dd can go. if the dad is driving...either she won't be going, or I;ll be driving her.

I work at a convention center and we host a few proms each year. Perhaps because of our rate structure we seem to avoid the inner-city type proms but we do alright with the upper-suburbian types. Our last prom was very nice and some of the young ladies were down-right gorgeous. Our only problem was we had an inner-city class reunion at the other end of our building and some of the reunion attendees seemed to want to find new dates...

Over my dead body would my daughter's wear anything like you described!

I often wonder myself what the heck is wrong with some parents.

(waiting for the usual "I don't see anything wrong with it" reply. There's ALWAYS at least one)

You know I was waiting for that too. YOU know how there usually needs to be one person who thinks that kids should have what ever they want.
Maybe the people who let their kids dress like this think anything associated with Disney is too wholesome for them. (there you go Charade that should bring them out :cool1: ) :Pinkbounc :rotfl:

I've spent most of the past several weeks in New Orleans. I've seen many, many prom night groups out for dinner or partying.

New Orleans is pretty laid back and relaxed, but I have to say that I've seen NOTHING like this. I've seen groups from public schools, private schools, from different ethnic and racial groups (usually mixed).

The one thing that I've noticed is that red and hot pink seem to be the "hot" colors this year.

obviously there are parents who think the gowns you describe are acceptable, because someone bought them and wore them.

I bet we'll hear something like "I'd rather give in on the dress than allow her to (fill in something else inappropriate)"

I do not even know WHERE one would purchase these gowns unless there is like a porn catalogue out there somewhere.

I have 2 dds ages 5 & soon to be 10.... My daughters better hope they never let on like they want to wear anything like that. I know I'm not raising a couple of saints by any means but as parents we have to set boundaries or else. A lady that I work with brought in some prom pics a couple of weeks ago and I must say that ALL of the girls in the pics were dressed very elegant and very tasteful. But I have seen the dresses that you're talking about and it's awful to think that parents let their daughters go out like that. I want my kids to have nice clothing and be stylish but I also want them to look like they have good character and class, I don't want them to be seen as an object.
