Do couples ever go to prom without flowers? My DD may be going to a prom.....but so far it seems a bit disorganized because the boy hasn't brought her the guest form that needs to be turned in for her to be allowed to attend.

I called the school to ask when the deadline for turning it in would be, and it is 3 days before prom. So she may not know if she is going until three days before....and if that happens I don't think there will be time for flowers.

So do some couples go without flowers? Anyone heard of this? I said I would pay for the flowers, but I don't want to order them or get them unless I know for sure my DD is going to go.

You can order them a couple days before, shouldn't be a problem.

Really? In the past they have said they want 2 weeks notice. I guess I can try. I am not good at the whole 'last minute' thing, but it will all work out. She has a few dresses here at the house that she can pick from and use one of them. I would think the boy would need to order his tux soon (the prom is 2 weeks from this coming Saturday). So who knows.

I guess when it was my DD's own prom, we planned things very far in advance. This will be a first to be figuring out a prom days in advance....if it actually happens. haha

In 2010 when my son went to prom I ordered them 3 or 4 days before at a Florist without any problems.

I mean if you want special hard to get flowers then there could be an issue but for readily available flowers it should not be an issue. I wanted an orchid for his girlfriend's corsage and it wasn't a problem.

HTH.

Last year, my DD's boyfriend neglected to buy her flowers (loser) after I specifically asked if he had it covered several times.

That morning I went to Michaels, and bought a wrist corsage (kit) thingy. It was a beaded stretchy bracelet with a Platform and ribbons threaded through to tie the flowers on with. I also bught floral glue, some rhinestone things on wires, and floral tape. I then went to the Grocery store and an inexpensive bouquet or 2 of flowers and assembled one myself!!! (and had lots of flowers left over for some vases in my house) I even made a bouteneer (sp?)with a single rose, some greenery and baby's breath and some floral tape.

All of her friends loved her flowers so much that they asked me to do thiers for them this year!!! (I am only doing 4)

Since you have a heads up, you could buy it ahead of time and "practice" I have decided not to use large roses because they are too heavy, but I will be using lilies, orchids, tearoses, and whatever smaller flowers I can find. One girl wants daisies...

Oh my! That sounds great, but I am not a craft-type person at all. I don't think my DD will really care much. In fact, we have a couple silk corsages from past proms (I have twin girls, and there have been a lot of proms), so she could use ones of those, but the boy wouldn't have one.

My DD doesn't really care one way or another if she goes to this prom. This is a boy she works with, and he doesn't have a date and she said she would go with him if he wanted a date. But he is a Junior in High School and my DD is a Freshman in college (so proms are no longer of interest.....but this boy doesn't have many friends, and no girls as friends, and I guess he gets bullied at school and is having a hard year, and he has never been to a dance, so she just offered to go if he wanted her to, but he doesn't seem be very organized, so I could see this being a last minute thing.....but with twin DD's who have been going to many proms over the past three years, we have several dresses at the house already, so she could get ready at a moments notice...only issue would be the flowers).

But thanks for the suggestion. I will see if last minute is possible to order them. I may not get to use the place we have used in the past, but maybe one of the other flower shops can do something up quickly.

We bought ds's dates coursage the day before. Ordered it then picked it up next day.

I would guess a Boys would take less time.

This is true. I am honestly a little sad because I figure it will be the last prom I am ever involved with (haha) and since my DD didn't care about what they wore, I had something in mind that I would love to get them. But I wouldn't be able to order what I want at the last minute, but you are right. I am sure we can get something.

Years ago, I used to work doing proms/wedding corsages/bouts for my cousin's florist.

3 days notice should be fine, unless you are looking for something really unusual as far as flower/color/trims. We used to stock up on various ribbons, trim, etc. so when I had the 50th instruction of "white rose wrist corsage for black dress" I could do something a little different (when it was for the same school).:lmao:

Wasn't unusual to get some "day of" walk-ins.

I know you said you weren't crafty, but if you have several silk corsages on hand, you might be able to deconstruct one enough to make a boutonniere for her date.

I did this this year. In a pinch, our grocery store's floral department often has corsages to pick up and purchase the day of.

Surely, the florists in your area know when prom and homecoming are for the local schools and can accommodate a few last minute orders.

Really? Walk in the "day of"? Wow! I wonder why the place I usually use says 2 weeks notice. Of course, I do remember it had to do with how many proms were going on that same night.

I guess we will figure out something. Thanks everyone! Honestly, if this was one of my DD's own proms, things would be SO much different. We have never had one of the attend a prom with such a lack of organization. haha

I never thought about the grocery store floral department. That is something to keep in mind if we do end up trying to get something the day off.

I think I'd find another florist... ;) I mean, the nature of the business sometimes is walk-ins - hospital arrangements, funeral flowers, men buying "make-up" flowers (when they screwed up).

We especially were aware of our clientele history from year-to-year as far as homecomings/proms for multiple schools; heck even for Valentine's Day, Sweetest Day and Easter to determine how many extra flowers to order.

You may not get, say, pale coral alstroemeria (sp?) but they should be able to throw together a white carnation bout in 5 minutes.

OK, well I am not going to worry about it then and just try a different place. I have been using the same place for 3 years now and thought they were all like that. So if he actually gets her the form by the deadline, and we only have 3 days, I will try some new places and see who can pull something together.

Thanks everyone!

You can order the same day or just go pick them up in the morning. Just call first to avoid a wait. No problem.

DS17's prom is this weekend. He ordered the corsage yesterday, no problem getting it in time.

We ordered the tux a few weeks ago and picked it up today. There was a couple in there ordering a tux for Saturday. They were told to pick their top 3 choices and the lady called the tux people to see which was available in his size.

Also, I've seen some photos on Facebook of Proms with very casually dressed boys. Shirt and tie, no jacket. I think that would look out of place at ours, but apparently not all Proms are formal.

I never thought about the grocery store floral department. That is something to keep in mind if we do end up trying to get something the day off.

We always go to the grocery store for flowers. Of course, our grocery store is Wegman's, and they have a fantastic floral department. I think for homecoming, I ordered a wrist corsage on Thursday for Saturday. Something like that.

What is the popular flower corsage now?

The girls here still wear wrist corsages- but not big giant ones. I try to get them made with the tea roses- they are sweeter looking on a small wrist (in my opinion). DS 17's girlfriend is a tiny little thing, so 2 big rose buds on her wrist would look silly.
