Prom expense question...

I am hoping I am not wrong in asking this. My son is taking a "friend" to prom in a couple of weeks and the tickets go on sale this week. The cost is $25.00per person. Do I suggest that the girl buy her own ticket, or do I just go ahead and buy two tickets and keep quiet? He is springing for the dinner and my parents have offered to rent a limo for a few hours, but between the tux and coursage, I am already into the $200.00 mark. TIA
The last prom I went to was in 1989 and my dress cost $250.00 then. I can't imagine how much a nice prom dress is now.

I'd pay the $25.00 and not worry about it.

I'm going to revive this old thread even though I know the issue of paying for the date's ticket has been resolved;)

Our high school was so small that the junior/senior prom was combined. Tickets each year was $85 pp. Junior year I went with my ex-boyfriend (he was an ex at the time, but we agreed to go together anyway. What a miserable time!! HUGE mistake!) and we paid for our own tickets. My mom offered to pick up my corsage and his boutonneire from the same florist so they'd match, and he never paid her back. (He was a jerk, haha) My mom paid for my hair ($20 done by my aunt's friend), too, as well as my dress. My dress was a beautiful, pale blue, cinderella like ballgown from Macy's-- for $30!! We bought it at the end of the summer going into my junior year and saved it. It's a beautiful dress that I still have. I used jewelry I already had and bought shoes at Payless.
Senior year, I went with a friend and we paid our own way, but again, bought each others' flowers. My hair was about $40, I think, at a salon in my mall, and I made an appointment at the Clinique counter at Lord and Taylor (in the same mall). They did my make up for FREE and there was no obligation to buy-- I highly reccomend this for any parents of girls who want their make-up done professionally. My dress was also from Macy's, this time on sale for $100-- a beautiful red evening gown. Accessories were only about $70, total-- for shoes, jewelry, and my purse. There's definitely ways to make prom not SUPER expensive!

I'm so glad to hear another parent say that because we have been saying that to our daughter all alone, keep up your grades and we'll foot the bills. If she wants a summer job that's one thing, but during the school year it's all about studies and anything she wants to be involved with at school, they are only kids for so long and once you start working, you never really stop.

I thought the same thing.....My DD is only in 6th grade but school is first!.. Any school activites that she wants to be involved in we will gladly pay for! When she turns 16 if she wants to work part time for extra gas/spending money ok, but I would never ask her to pay for her own way into a school event, even Prom. I will say that for my Prom I wanted a $500 dress and my mom made me pay for it.....it is still hanging in my closet.........LOL.
