Projection Mapping Life Expectancy?

Not really setting you straight, it's only because I've spent way too much time at WDW.

Nah, you set me straight. In a good way. Sad thing is I've been there countless times but sometimes just take for granted certain things. The first time I saw Lumiere I was highly impressed... all that technology in such a little space ("iiiitttty biiittttyyy living space"). And while I'm impressed with it's implementation on the other animatronics like those found on the Frozen ride and SDMT, I feel it looks kind of cheap in those instances.

Agreed, I'm not a fan.

Because of the cost difference I envision it being used more in the future. I'm old school, in addition to being old, and prefer more fireworks less projections, and quality mechanical animatronic features instead of projected features.

I think the projection stuff is very cool. TBH I'm sort of burned out on pyro. (See what I did there?):earboy2:

Not glorified wallpaper, Madame Leota, the 5 singing busts and the Grim Grinning Ghosts. I would also include the the ballroom scene, but in a different format. It's also used on at least one of the characters in POTC.

I would add Little Leota and the bride to your list.

Bumping an old thread here...

Don't forget that this mapping isn't just used on buildings (i.e., Cinderella's Castle, ToT) but also has been implemented as part of animatronics. The Seven Dwarfs in the SDMT ride is an obvious example as are the character's in the Frozen ride.

Side note:
I found this 'whitepaper' of sorts from Imagineering giving a bit more information on the tech that you all might enjoy reading:

Edit: user below corrected me.

Agreed that mapping isn't limited to outdoor buildings. When I sat through the Tiki Room last month, I couldn't help but think that an overall update merged with Moana and mapping could totally recreate that space.

Interesting white paper, but the ones I drafted for the military were much more detailed and had a couple of more pages. Good find!

Yea. Having drafted a few technical docs as well, I hesitated to call it a whitepaper. Thus, the quotes. It’s more like an abbreviated technical paper with some marketing thrown in. But I did think it was neat and appears to be a legit Disney Imagineering paper. Made me wonder what other similar documents are available via a simple google search since I found that one so easily.
