Project Runway, Season 5 Official Discussion Thread.

As far as Daniel's outfit, poor choice of fabric and wrong sort of ceremony. I loved when Michael Kors said "where is she from... Team Cocktail Land?" (something like that). Oh, Michael! :lmao: At least his outfit showed some creativity and skill.

Did Michael say that? :happytv: I haven't seen this episode yet. I love that man!

Lori

I LOVE both Michael Kors and Nina Garcia. Heidi is OK, although very often her comments are just a repetition of what the other 2 have already said. And Tim is the perfect choice as a mentor.

I agree that they seem to have had a hard time finding real talent this season, and instead settled for bizarre personalities.

I would have LOVED to see Michael Kors rate the outfits the Olympians wore tonight for the Opening Ceremonies. "Are they from the Republic of Ralph Lauren?" He even put a giant Ralph Lauren polo symbol on the front of the blazer. Um, wouldn't an American flag have been more appropriate?

Okay, so they weren't awful and I do like the idea of the men and women wearing the same outfit. I just wish as Americans we had a "traditional dress" that embodied our cultural past. I find those the most interesting of the countries walking out. I guess we could send them out as Puritans and Indians and have a mini Thanksgiving Day parade. But that's not very inclusive of our culture as a whole. And who would want to wear those buckled shoes?

Actually, we do. And it was worn for opening ceremonies one year (but I can't for the life of me remember when! Maybe it was Los Angeles?????)

Levi blue jeans and cowboy hats. Can't get more American than that! :thumbsup2 Now I always want the team to walk in with jeans and cowboy hats and a swagger. ;)

I liked the USA's outfit, although without the hat.:scared: What I fail to understand is why so many countries dress their teams in sport jackets. Sure, they look nice, BUT it is the SUMMER Olympics and you can guarantee that it would be hot and sticky no matter what. Why would you dress your team in hot clothing? I liked the insignia on the jacket. I liked the Olympic rings and I liked the red, white and blue ribbon. I thought that was very representative of America. I didn't see any overt Ralph Lauren insignia, though you could tell who designed it. Did I miss something?

As for cowboy wear, that isn't completely representative of the US either. If you asked my DH, he'd say that everyone should wear a preppy golf outfit. That's HIS American uniform when he's not in a suit. ;) Come to think of it, that's how his friends dress, too.

THat is just plain frightening!

The one designer I love this season is Kenley. Her look and overall designs are something I would wear everyday.

Suede is getting annoying, why is he always referring to himself in the 3rd person?:lmao:

I would have much preferred to see this week's challenge winner's Olympic outfits on our athletes. That Ralph Lauren getup made them look like snobby rich kids.

I agree with the previous poster, what was up with the GIANT RLPOLO logo on the lapel? That was just tacky.

Well, DH should love this one:

and this one, which I think they were originally supposed to wear to the Opening Ceremonies, not sure what happened. It looks a lot more "summery."

I'm sorry I could only find one picture of Kobe in the outfit last night, but I can't link it. It had a big white RL Polo symbol on the left breast pocket, and it stood out a lot more than the multicolored Olympic rings on the other side.

I mean, they are definitely Ralph Lauren, so why does he feel the need to put so many insignias all over it? He made millions of dollars on the deal. They are supposed to be representing the USA, not his company. I mean, on one of those above outfits he has THREE insignias! Crazy!

I wonder if he is insinuating that his brand is "inherently American" or "as American as the Red, White, and Blue."

It's tacky for that logo to be there. It would be one thing to have it on your regular clothes, but these are uniforms for our representative athletes to THE WORLD. And yes, he probably made millions to even draw up designs, so why they logo?

My DH would love the one on the right with the striped color.

I just looked at a photo of the athletes. I completely missed the polo player on the jacket. I only saw the Olympic side. That crest was enough for me to know it was PRL. You're right. The polo player had no business being on that jacket.

Found this quote about the deal which supposedly excuses the insignias:

“A Ralph Lauren Polo spokesperson admitted to earning under $10 million for the deal. The company’s okay with the paltry sum because the venture provides an opportunity to spread its tentacles to China, where Polo don’t have nearly as much going on as its European counterparts.” - The Cut

Paltry!

The Polo Logo is the brightest thing aside from the cap. Even the Olympics logo pales in comparison.

From the L.A. Times Image Section:
"Ralph Lauren was a good choice for the American team, though the Polo ponies embroidered on the lapels of the athletes' blue blazers were almost as large as the Olympic rings (Lauren has never been known for his subtlety). White pants are among the most difficult things in all of fashiondom to pull off, and true to form, these didn't flatter. A few pleats would have helped. The white newsboy caps were a nice touch, broadcasting a can-do spirit, especially on basketball player Kobe Bryant, who cocked his to the side."

And what is up with her thinking she is a surreal designer? Does she not know what surreal means? That's what annoyed me the most about her, so I was happy to see her go.

I thought the same thing! My DD asked me what surreal meant and I told her not what that woman thinks. It reminded me a bit of "The Princess Bride". I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Coming late to the thread, but my favorites design wise so far are Suede, Kelli, Terry, and Kenleigh. Though Suede drives me up a wall with the third person thing. Letha lady and Daniel are my least favorites. Though his blue cup dress was amazing.

Well.. I could go on about how the United States has a high GNP, salaries, etc. Compared to the world (especially the third world countries) Americans are the rich kids!

oh my friend, while there are many kids who are blessed, there are many who are homeless, in abusive families, don't have enought to eat, etc.:sad2:

Yes, but on paper the poverty level of American workers is the "rich" salary of others.

I recall my neighbors stating that a good Indian salary was $10 a month. $10 american dollars a MONTH.

Yes, Americans are hurting. Yes, there should not be people hungry or hurting, but even the poverty level $25K annual salary is NOT $10 a month.

Not to debate facts, but if you look at American salaries versus other world salaries, you would see that we are in fact "rich kids".

You know, while it seems they're supposed to be judging based on just the individual competition's work - I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel got a 'pass' this week because of the plastic cup dress.

I had forgotten he made the plastic cup dress. Yes, I think that definitely had something to do with it. And when someone keeps appearing in the bottom 3 every week, you would already have them on your radar as someone you aren't impressed with.

I just hate that the producers have so much to say about who stays and who goes. I think Stella would have been gone that first day if they didn't find her to be such a character.

I agree that it is hard to pick favorites from among them right now, but I think I usually have that problem at the beginning - either I pick one person and love them or am ambivalent for a while. And does this season have more contestants than usual? Just seems to be a big group.

Same amount of contestants as every season. :confused3
