Profanities

LindsayDunn228 di you have a chance to read the thread on the other board before it was deleted? I do not think there was a need to SHOUT.

I used two words in that thread at least used the 1st and last letters with asterix between but did not realise that this amounted to trying to get around the rules, I was actually hoping for a moderator to give me guidance.

The words were;

a four letter word with B at each end when refering to a chest enhancement operation **** job.

The second was referring to a post on another board which was commenting on the speach of a femail US politician who made a comment about another politician. She called him a ****** being a derogatory word for gay man, which is also the name for a small bundle of firewood and a meatball.

I wanted to know if these were on the disallowed list. At least one must have been but I do not know which one.

I gave you a heads up in post #4.:confused3 Like I said, just type whatever and let the filter do it's job. If it comes up asteriks, then you know it's on the disallowed list.

My original posting was done before your post, and I thought that you would get points if you were asterixed on posting.

I have just tried what was suggested by a mod in previewing and the two original words were both disallowed but a further word was allowed which I thought worse than those two.HA HA HA

I guess I kind of assumed that, too. Is it not the case?

Yes, but perhaps you could have gone back and edited it. I don't know when you got the warning. I am fairly certain that you do not get points for using a filtered word. It's only a violation of the rules to attempt to bypass the filter, such as the examples I gave.

Seriously? I wonder if these two words get starred out....

Fanny
Pissed..............

Edited to add...Now in the UK those 2 words are FAR worse than **** and ******! The latter of which - by the way - is a local delicacy round where I live served with Grey Peas!!!!

No I didn't. I edited my post for you. Hope that makes things right. :confused3

Tiggernut_jadie is right and 'fanny' is deemed as a rude word here in the UK but is not censored here even though UK people including teens visit. To be honest I rarely hear it spoken due to its meaning here and in the early 90's when visiting the US and Canada was quite shocked to hear it being used!
I guess it just shows how differently words are interpretted, even in two different English speaking areas.

Claire ;)

I've known people named Fanny.:confused3 :rotfl:

Yea, it's a whole different body part here in the U.S.

I think that since we have a worldwide audience here that word issues should be looked at a bit closer that perhaps other issues. This situation shows a very clear difference in language use and definition between two cultures. Is it completely fair to so quickly judge on the use of a word before understanding the context if the writer is not from the US? I mean, you could just say "well they should know!" but is that really fair? When I write I don't sit here thinking about every word I use... I just naturally use what I would use. Isn't that the same as every other person is doing?

OK, my whole life I've always heard "fanny" as a nice word for butt, like "hiney".

What body part is a fanny in England? Just type it out, we'll get it from the number of *s. :)

Fanny in England is the female, um, front bottom.

Some clarification-

Profanity is not permitted on the DISboards. Toward this end, we have many words in our filter. Typing these words will result in asterisks (****) being displayed rather than the word. A poster will not get points when this happens.

If a poster types part of a filtered word or uses creating spelling or special characters to defeat the word filter so that (1) the filter does not catch the word and (2) the word is still recognizable, that is a violation of our profanity filtering policy and *will* earn the poster infraction points.

We are based in the US, and our purpose is to plan travel to destinations located primarily in the US. Therefore, our language is based on American English usage.

As another poster pointed out, cooperating with our policies to keep language clean and respectful (per American standards) is not "baby talk", but simple respect for these forums and our posters.

W****r

Just trying out another word.......;)

Edited to add: Sorry but I've got to edit that one out myself, it's just too rude! - I accept that the site is based in the US but really perhaps it might be worth taking into account that there are certain words which aren't socially acceptable in other countries. Surely it would be better to find out those wrods which are obscenities in other countries and adding them to your banned list!

If we're talking about respect for others, then surely this should apply to people from other countries - or are only American people worthy of respect?

If that's what I think it is, it's a word similar to 'jerk' here in the US. Perhaps it originally referred to ************, but that is not the association any longer.

P.S.- bloody isn't an insult/curse word here either.
