Hi guys, I knew if anyone can help me out it would be you :) I am having trouble getting the rich colors on my photos. I have tried some manual settings and a lot of my photos look washed out or appear to have a purple hue to them. What I am currently using is a Kodak easyshare 6490-any suggestions? I thought maybe a filter, but they only make one and there are mixed reviews about it leaving a shadow on the photos. Maybe I need to upgrade-any suggestions on something under 500.00?? Thanks for your input :goodvibes

That sort of sounds like a white balance issue. Do you set it or let the camera do auto. There is probably nothing wrong with the camera. It sounds like you have outgrown your camera to be honest.

If you are going to upgrade for around $500, I would check out the Canon S3 IS, Canon G7, or for a DSLR there is the Pentax K110D for around $495 from Buydig with the kit lens.

It's impossible to say without some sample photos.

Washed out photos could mean that you were shooting towards a bright light and had glare problems. It could mean that your exposure was off. It could be that you were trying to capture more dynamic range (darkest to brightest) than your camera was capable of.

Purple fringing if often seen in the light areas around high contrast edges with cheap optics. It's called chromatic aberration. An overall purple hue could be a white balance problem. It could also be a hardware problem with the sensor. It could also be the result of errors in post-processing.

The purple hue happens mostly when I am taking evening photos in the automatic settings of the camera. When I switch to manual and up the ISO it seems a little better. The washed out look seems to happen to me a lot in day photos and I tried afternoon photos when the sun wasn't as bright. Maybe I just need some pointers on how to stay out of the light or not capture so much light. Also, what do I need to do to take photos in the sun without getting such a shadow on the face? I will post a few pics but someone will have to help me with that as I have never posted any on here. Thanks for the help and input. :)

To post photos you have to have them on a site like photobucket or any other...

then you put it in as [ img]http://.....[ /img] remove the spaces inside the brakets and use the url of the picture from the site it is posted at.

Fill flash is how you remove the shadows from a sunlight picture. You turn on the flash even though it is bright, and it removes the shadows.

As a rank amature it sounds like too much light is getting in your camera, turn down the ISO in bright light might help

Hmmm...sounds like the camera has color issues when shooting in low light. Perhaps the camera doesn't balance the color channels well in low light situations.

Sounds like an issue with sunlight hitting the lens. This most often happens when you are shooting towards the sun. Try to shoot with the sun behind you or beside you. If you have to shoot towards the sun, try to hold your hand between the sun and the camera to shade the lens. The key is to make sure that you don't have direct sunlight entering the lens. That's one reason why people with fancy cameras often have a hood on their lens.

what do I need to do to take photos in the sun without getting such a shadow on the face?

It may seem counterintuitive, but when taking pictures of people in bright sunlight, it is often a good idea to use your flash. The light from the flash helps fill in the shadows cast by things like hats, eyebrows, etc. When you look at your subject, if they or any significant part of their face is in the shadows, it's a good idea to use your flash.

I have a lot of photos on the Webshots photo site, what do I do to get them here. I know I sound crazy, just not familiar with some of these things.
