Problems with Chromecast?

I had such high hopes for Chromecast but it’s turning out to be a piece of junk.

I got one for Christmas because I wanted to be able to watch Netflix on my tv. For the first two weeks or so it was great..then, one day, it froze at 99% when loading and stopped working after that.

When I say stopped working, anything I would stream would start out really pixelated and wouldn’t clear up. When the chromecast worked, it would take about 30 seconds and then the picture would be super clear. Also, I could disconnect from the chromecast but the show or movie would keep playing with no way to stop it. I would have to do a factory reset on it every time I wanted to watch something. So, if I was binging something, I’d have to do a factory reset in between episodes.. SO ANNOYING.

We got it switched for a new one at the store where it was purchased and now after about a month this new one is doing the same thing!!! I’m so beyond frustrated.

I know I’m not doing something to screw it up because all I literally do is pick something to stream and then it freezes when loading.

I don’t have the advanced one because my tv isn’t 4K. I don’t have anything else to stream my Netflix too (Wii or other gaming device or Roku). Getting a smart tv is not an option right now and, really, I shouldn’t have to shell out $$$ to be able to stream Netflix.

Does anyone have the same problem? Any tricks I can try to fix it on my own?

It sounds like it could be a bad connection between your chromecast and your router. Are you set up on the 5ghz or the 2.4ghz? try setting it up on the 5ghz. the 2.4ghz although is better to use but if you got a microwave inbetween, the chromecast tend to stop working for me... lol

It says it’s 60hz. I have no idea what that means or how to change it. Is 60 good?

thats probably the TV's refresh rate. what you need to do is check your wifi signal. When you connect it to the wifi, does 2 wifi access point comes up or just one. the 2nd one usually will take an extra 5-10 seconds to pop up if you have it set up.

Also, try it on a TV that is closer to your router/modem. Does the problem still occur?

When I connected it to the wifi, there was only one option, the one I named. I don’t have another tv to test it on. Why would it work fine for a few weeks and then randomly stop?

I’m going to be on a first name basis with the guy at the store if this keeps happening lol

We've had two for a couple of years now and have had no problems at all. I also have one in my office that will buffer but that is a signal/usage problem.

try rebooting your router/modem then. thats the only thing i can think of left to do.

I have had mine a couple years and it works fine most of the time. At really high usage times (after dinner) it can have issues with buffering and freezing, but that's pretty rare and is an issue with the internet in general and not Chromecast specifically.

Everything else works fine on the router (3 smartphones and two laptops ).

That could be the issue, too many devices connected! I know when we are having issues streaming we disconnect a few devices and it works a lot better. I love our chromecast, we have one in the bedroom because we don't have a smart tv in there and it works great.

Those things are never all connected at once. I’m having problems with it now and I’m the only one home.

Watch this video on you tube. It maybe with the chromecast plugged directly into your tv it is not getting a good wi-fi signal which causes it to buffer/freeze. This might help.

Thank you. I will give this a try.

It’s still odd to me that it worked for a month and then stopped all of a sudden with absolutely nothing being changed.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I spoke with Chromecast and we switched from 2.4 ghz to 5ghz and now it works perfectly. Without this post, I wouldn’t have known to ask about it.

I could have done it on my own but I don’t know that much about it so they guided me step by step.

Thank you again :)
