Problems using multiple contracts

Hi everyone...

I have 3 "home" resorts...In making a reservation today well within the 7 month window, it first took any banked/borrowed points (great and fine with me), but then I could not specify a certain number of points I wanted to be taken from 2 different contracts (in current 2009 use year) in order to complete my reservation. I wanted to be left with x amount in my BLT contract and x amount in my BCV contract for reservations next year. I went 3 levels up, and was told that "the system doesn't let us pull specific amounts from different contracts". I told them I thought this didn't seem right with DVC pushing add on contracts, but not allowing people to manage their different contracts as they wished. Anyway, now that I'm sitting here thinking about it further, I guess I should have hung up, banked the specific number of points I wanted to, leaving the exact number of points in my 2009 use year that I wanted to be used from each contract. I may have lost my standard view BLT room, though, because she stressed limited availability for my dates. Anyone else run into this with multiple contracts? I feel like writing a letter....I guess "the system" rules---

That is correct. You could transfer points from one contract to another, but you are only allowed one transfer per UY in or out per master contract.

Yes, the same think happened to me a couple of years ago and I believe it's totally unfair! Since when does "the system" decide where and when we DVC owners are allowed to use our own points?

The answer should not be that "the system won't allow us" to choose which resort points we want to use, the answer is "the system" should be brought up to date to work properly so DVC owners can decide when and where to use the points they own.

Unfortunately, the only solution to protect DVC owners under the current "system" is to make a "fake" reservation to temporarily protect the points we want to for a future vacation later in the year. This is the only way to protect our points from a specific resort we want to use with the 11 month advantage.

Unfortunately, this "fake" reservation ties up a room that another DVC member might otherwise be able to have. It also creates much more work for Member Services because now they have to go through all the motions and paperwork of a "fake reservation" and then have to do more work when the DVC owner cancels that "fake" reservation so he can use his points as originally planned.

The smart thing to do would be to simply get a competent computer team to adjust "the system" so that it works properly for the DVC owners it is supposed to serve!

Best wishes,
Dave

Well said Dave! I'll have to keep that fake reservation trick in mind...But you are right, it seems ridiculous to tie up a room even if only for a short time! I would think that this issue will come up more and more as DVC sells more add on contracts.

You said it Dave! :cheer2:

We all need to stress this point more, with any of the DVC issues; "adjust "the system" so that it works properly for the DVC owners it is supposed to serve!"

Go, Dave, Go! :woohoo:

Is this just a problem for DVC reservations, or any reservations?

I recently made a reservation for Grand Californian Hotel, and was able to say take x points from resort A, and y points from resort B, and z points from resort C. (I have 13 contracts, all the same UY, and 10 resorts.)

You were changing your points into reservation points, not using home resort advantage, etc. They do the same thing with the Disney Cruise Line when you are booking and taking various points from your contracts is ok then.

You have one master contract and twelve add-ons, correct?

I seem to remember some talk a few years ago about DVC requiring using home resort points first if available in that UY. I haven't seen any comments on this in several years though. Ask them to resub the points and tell them how many of each you want to end up with.

We borrowed from 2011 and were able to tell MS which of our points we wanted to use. We left our master contract home resort alone and borrowed from a later add on. Didn't seem to be a problem.

I feel stupid but I don't understand the fake reservation concept, please explain. Thanks.

If your later add on was under the same master contract, then it isn't a problem. The problems begin with two ore more master contracts.

I have one master contract with 2 add ons. It was a problem for me.

Uhhhh....I have one master contract with 2 add ons. I am here to tell you that it was a problem for me.
What was their reasoning. Was it requiring home resorts points to be used first or that the computer couldn't divide it up the way you wanted to? Would you have had to borrow any points to do it your way? You may want to call back and check on this as it's likely you can get it fixed.

I went 3 "levels" up and everyone said the same thing. That they cannot take "specific" amount of points from 2 different contracts. "The System" doesn't work that way. "The System" will allow them to list which contract they want to take the "majority" of points from, but will not take a specific number of points from either. I did have some banked and borrowed points which were taken first, but then I wanted to be left with a definite number of points in one contract for a reservation next year. Now I've re-figured all of my points and it will work, but I will have to use more points next year for the reservation than I had wanted to. I had just never envisioned that this would be a potential problem when I added on.

I vaguely recall an issue like this one time. I think it had to do with using banked points. Once I used up the banked points for part of a reservation, the computer automatically chose current points that were in that same contract for the rest, rather than in an add-on, which I wanted. I don't remember if I tried to resolve it with them, or just accepted it.

if you have multiple contracts, you would need to make a fake reservation to "use" the points from a given contract to keep MS from using them for a given reservation. then as long as you cancel before 31 days out and within your banking window, you can cancel your fake reservation and use those pts as you prefer.

It's true that MS cannot specify which contracts to pull regular points from when you have several for the same resort.

We were faced with this when we were trying to leave a few of our contracts full in preparation to selling them.

That's bad enough, but it sounds like the OP had two different resorts, and still could not specify. Just what are the specifics of this system issue? Does it only happen when you are using banked + current points? It seems like it couldn't generally be true that you cannot specify which resort's points to use -- we'd know that by now (and be fuming about it!)

This is true....My original contract is BCV and I have BWV and BLT add-ons throught DVC direct. I was trying to use x amount of points from BCV and x amount from BLT (current year points) to complete a reservation for August. This is when I was told that they could not specify amounts of points from each contract...That "the system" was not set up to be able to do that. After going up to the third "level" of management, I gave up...
