I don't think TAs are necessarily bad, but I question their necessity nowadays. With the internet especially, people have access to so much more info and can plan their vacations just as easily as a TA.
We used a TA one time to plan our trip to Australia. We decided to use her specifically because she was native Australian but my DH, doing his usual exhaustive pre-trip research, knew more about the places we were planning to visit than she did. At one point, he had to tell her specifically which rafting company to book with that would allow our children (she claimed the kids were too young for the excursion).
I think if the travel agent industry wants to survive, it needs to start offering something more to lure in customers like DH and I. We didn't save any money, time or headeaches by using a TA. And when people encounter a TA like the OP did, that's an even greater headache!
TA are nice once in a while. When you don't have the time/desire to do your own research and ressies. I'm a planner though so I never use them, but its nice to have the options.
Speaking as a travel agent myself I can assure you that we are not all bad!
Lots of people (myself included) like to do all their own research and are very competant at booking everything themselves, but a lot of people wouldn't know where to begin or simply don't have the time to plan trips themselves.
People come in to me (in Ireland) and say they want to go to Florida. For a lot of them that is ALL they know. It's up to me to help them along with the rest of the info.
I have been working in the Travel Industry since I was 16, now 11 years later. I have come a very long way. I LOVE MY JOB, but I don't know everything about every destination. I myself specialze in certain destinations especially of course in Disney.
You would be surprised how many people have never been AND don't know the first thing to do when they plan a Disney trip. So for those reading this thread and of course the OP, please don't rain on all Travel Agents parades there are many of us out here who will do whatever it takes for our loyal customers. But mistakes happen I feel your Travel Agent mishandled the whole situation and should have noticed her mistake much much sooner than she did.
I don't think all travel agents are bad - you put words in my mouth. Just because I don't personally choose to use a TA and don't see them as necessary doesn't mean I think ALL travel agents are bad. That's quite a leap. I do think the OPs TA was horrendous and doesn't do anything for a fledgling industry. I recognize that some people, for whatever reason, still want to use TAs. That's their choice and more power to them. It's just not for me.
I just finished reading this entire thread and I am just shocked at the behavior of that TA!! I am so very happy that you finally got everything settled. As a suggestion, if you do use a TA on your next trip, make sure to use a TA who is a Disney Travel Specialist. I hope that you and your family can finally relax and have a great time at Disney!!!!
I am sure glad you got everything settled. I use a TA but they deal strickly with Disney and are very dedicated to their clients. Not once did they disappoint me. There is always a sour apple out their that spoils it for everyone else.
