What is the most important problem America is facing in education today????

I'm taking a grad class and this is one of our questions...wanted some other opinions.

Lack of basic economics.
Lack of civics.
But,
The biggest problem: Teachers Unions.

Our kids, well one of them, the other is too young-
Goes to a private school.
Better discipline, more civics and ethics/morals classes.
We just have lost faith in public schools.
Im sure some are absolutely GREAT.
We just choose to use private schools.

Trying to bring up to or keep every student at the same standard regardless of ability.

I’m sure I’ll get a few flames, but what the heck

Lack of discipline and student/parent accountability.

Parents under minding the teacher's authority

Lazy teachers

Teachers who have no business in a classroom

Teachers who decided to major in education "because it looked easy" I swear I had a coworker say this to me.

Apathy toward education and boredom in the classroom in kids starting around 7th/8th grade.

It seems like the younger kids are excited about school and eager to learn. And then something happens around 7th/8th grade -- and by the time the kids are in high school they seem to HATE school, and not care about learning.

(I personally think the entire high school system needs to be overhauled.)

Education is the biggest form of injustice. Children living in rural or inner city ares do not receive near as much opportunities as those living in better off areas. In phildealphia, only 50% of the kids beginning kindergarten will never graduate, and those that do have an 8th grade average education. These kids are being robbed of their potentials at a very young age, and its not fair.

Schools that do well on standardized exams get more funding, while those who do poorly receive less. Schools with more resources tend to do better, yet they keep getting more and the schools that really need it do not. Its stupid.

My statistics are from the teach for america website, which could be a good place to check for your topic.

Parents, parents, parents.

Look at how many threads are on the DIS - all complaining about teachers, schools, policies. They act like schools should exist only for them.

Then at the opposite end of the spectrum are the parents who do not care at all.

Secondly - Special Ed is killing the schools. That is the reason most kids I know go to private schools - no special ed kids - they use an incredible amount of resources.

The near extinction of the ' american family' and personal accountability. Oh and always worrying about kids getting their feeling's hurt so everyone has to be the same. In my kids districts they now get 1, 2, & 3's on their report cards so they aren't labeled A,B & C students.

Lack of student accountability and true consequences for bad choices.

I don't even have to type a sentence...I can use an acronym...

NCLB.

Parental involvement. Parents need to take responsibility for their children's education. They should read to the younger kids at night. They should sit down with them and go over the homework.

My kids have attended private school. One of my son's teacher used to work in a poorly scoring public school. She said that hardly any of the parents showed up for parent night and that it was hard to get them involved.

I feel sorry for the teachers in failing schools. There is only so much a teacher can do. The only solution I can see to get more parents involved is to have some kind of incentive program. It's sad, but it's the only way I can see to motivate them to make an effort to become involved.

Who in the world came up with this stuff? My son's school has a C honor roll.

Most of the pressing issues in education are the direct result of economic disparity, demographic and social issues.

Because of these problems, schools are expected to do all sorts of things that have very little to do with actually educating children, and suck all sorts of time and resources.

I also think NCLB is the single most destructive thing to happen to education in a very long time.

The rote memorization of facts instead of an ability to analyze information and problem solve.

I can agree with that.

That's an easy question

Num ber one problem facing education in America is single parents.

End of Story.

lack of parent involvement
lack of parental support
parents undermining teachers
lack of respect for teachers by students and parents
standardized testing
NCLB
schools being glorified day cares
people relying on schools for children's basic needs (food, clothes)
teachers have to continually discipline instead of teach
disillusioned teachers
teaching to the test
helicopter parents

shall I go on????
