Probably silly question: what happens to your ADRs if you change your hotel ressie?

I can't believe after all this time I don't know this I just made my ADR's for our trip in May 2011. But as these are linked to my hotel reservations, what happens if I change where we're staying (such as a code comes out that has us changing to another hotel or room category)?

Even though you put in your reservation #, if you change your resort or cancel, nothing happens to your reservations.
(unless that has changed with the new upgraded system)
