Probably a dumb question, but I have to ask.

You Rock Mom Rules.

Guess I'm making a stop at Wal Mart!!!!!

:cheer2:

I think we're on the same trip. March 13th 4 days?

So which works better and doesnt make you drowsy, Bonamine or Dramamine?

Bonine is generally preferred because it causes less drowsiness and is only once a day. Some people claim dramamine works a little better. They are both antihistamines, so both should do the trick. Some people get drowsy on one or both or neither, so it is recommended you try it pre cruise to see. Personally, I can take more than the recommended dose of dramamine/benadryl and not feel the least bit drowsy. Some people take half a dose of benadryl and fall asleep...

Look, I will have harsh words here so nobody flame me please. I get motion sickness fairly easily. I have gone on two cruises now, and prior to leaving I call my family doctor and she has both times prescribed the patch for me. My co pay is about 10 dollars. It comes in a box with 4 patches, each one being good for about 2.5 days. I put it on before leaving for the plane. I have never had a problem at all. The first 10 minutes I get a teeny bit dizzy. Suffer through that and you will be fine. Both cruises I have had a few bad times when the boats were rocking. You can't always go somewhere and watch the horizon. I would NEVER consider going on a cruise without taking the patch. God knows, if I am already throwing up, there is no way I can take a pill and keep it down. PLEASE JUST GET THE PATCH IF YOU ARE WORRIED. The cruise is too much money to ruin not only your time, but hamper your family.

I use Dramamine the one that is for 24hrs. MY two DD's and I took it when we went on our cruise, didn't make us sleepy or anything worked out great. Have fun and enjoy :)

I was worried about motion sickness too, although I've never had it! I took a "better safe than sorry" attitude and decided to take a Bonine pill shortly before I boarded the Disney transfer bus to the ship. About halfway to the ship I had the worst feeling of nausea and headache come on, oh great now I'm going to barf on the bus was all I could think about.....but whatever it was went away quickly and I was fine the whole cruise. Maybe I should lay off the Bonine.

Does the patch make you sleepy or have any other adverse reactions?

We were fine and never used them again. BUT--And this is a MAJOR BUT--that cruise sailed from San Juan and did not cross the gulfstream. We were fine on 1st two DCL cruises--including a January cruise two years ago--but then last month on the 1/16 Wonder DW felt ill first night in rough seas--and we were told the last night of the cruise before us had it worse than we did going out.

So if you are going to cruise in January, do take precautions--and it isn't necessarily warm enough to swim in January in the Bahamas--not saying dont go then, I have sailed in January twice, but you should make informed decisions--and hot tubs are wonderful every month!

No flames Scillacc, but people really need to test the patch on land before they cruise. Some people do have adverse reactions. I have no problems with the patch, but you need to be VERY careful about touching it and then touching your eyes. It will dilate your eyes and make your vision blurry, so wash your hands thoroughly after touching a patch. We also get the bandaid flexible fabric tough bandaids and cut the adhesive part into a circle bigger than the patch, and then cover the patch with it. Just make sure to wash your hands between placing the patch on and cutting out/covering it with the bandaid adhesive. This process will help the patch stay on and prevent the medicine from spreading. The circle bandaids don't work as well because of the wound pad. The other common reaction is dry mouth, but I've never had a problem with drowsiness.

Each person reacts differently to any remedy-for me, bonamine worked better, no sleepiness. On Gravol I always fall asleep-great at night though. The patch gave me a disconnected, slightly dizzy feeling, seabands did nothing-still got sick.

I agree, try one for a day or two BEFORE you leave home and make your own decision. Bonamine is mine and my DS(17) choice, Gravol is DD's(20) choice for long trips only (so she can sleep), gravol make DS feel sick (headache etc.) DH uses nothing at all - prefers to "tough" it out.

Sorry, it doesn't seem like we can back you up on your idea. It was a nice thought!

Coming from a motion sick person, you can definitely feel the rock and roll of the ship. You can also see it!! Do not go in the theater, the curtains sway making it worse. you can watch the shows on the TV.

The pools sometimes become wave pools!! I loved it though because I felt like being in the pool was just like be in the ocean. In fact, I couldn't get out of the pool because I would start to feel sick even sitting on the edge.

On our first trip, I was soooooooo sick and it was only a 3 night. Needless to say, as bad as I felt we'll be going on our 4th cruise in 2006.

I take dramamine less drowsy and don't have any problems with sleepiness.

First cruise, deck 8, my internal gyroscope just would not settle down - not seasick exactly, but dizzy. Afterwards, I learned I should have taken bonine. Second cruise, deck 7 inside, took bonine and didn't need it. Third cruise, deck 6 brought the bonine but didn't take it. My advice, take it until it proves to be not necessary.

Whatever you take, try it out at home first! Bonine type medicine (non drowsy Dramamine) totally wipe me out for 24 hours. Not fun! That's taking the minimum dosage. I I ever had to take it again I would take a half dose, but I really have no plans to ever take it.

Instead I take concentrated ginger tablets that I bought at GNC. My DH also takes the ginger and was able to go on Mission:Space 3 times (spinning makes him sick). Ginger is not a medication per se and there aren't side effects. We also take ginger if we feel a little sick in general.

Before we cruise I will ask the dr about the patch and will try it out at home. I'd rather have it just in case. I don't think that I'll have a problem, but my DH might.

T&B

Wow! Lots of Canadians in da house! My wife is from Barrie, Ont. Early in our marriage, she mentioned Gravol for something (maybe our daughter was ill), and I thought she was talking about that stuff some driveways are made of.

I had heard before that on cruises they constantly feed you to help alleviate some of the problems with sea-sickness. Is this valid, or another urban legend?
