I think that we would like to invest in the DVC. I'm reading these boards to get an idea of what it is. I think we would like to purchase a re-sale. Is the only way to do this through an agent or do people sell their points privately? If they do how would I get a list of what's for sale? Also how many points would I need we are a family of four, DW DH and DD"S 5 and 8 months old. We usually vacation in April. Sorry about all the questions. I'm trying to figure this all out!

I have not heard of anyone selling it privately, but that does not mean it doesn't happen. I guess the problem would be finding a law firm that is familiar with DVC. I know that Disney has to approve the sale and I believe title searches are done. I highly recommned Jaki at atimeshare.com.

I can think of 2 places where people might try to sell their ownership interest without using a real estate agent: eBay (or something similar like Yahoo) and TUG - the Timeshare Users Group

Regardless, you'll still probably need a closing company to handle the actual closing, so there will still be some fee's associated with that part. The advantage to the seller is no commission needs to be paid.

Private sales do happen. The advantage to the seller is that they have more in pocket. The buyer can frequently get a slightly better deal also but with the ROFR, the savings may not be that great. The yahoo dvcrent is one place in addition to TUG. There are also many net locations where one can list for free including www.timeshares.com and the FSBO site in FL but I don't have the URL at the office. I've seen them in the news paper as well, actually bought one of mine listed in the USA Today though it was listed with a resale agent and we ended up closing through a firm in Miami who I would not use again.

If you're thinking you can save a lot privately, that's not likely unless you can cook up a scam to make DVC think it's lower than you're actually paying. Still, one can save some on resell over buying from DVC, maybe $2000 or so on 200 points depending on specifics, points availability, closing costs and the like. Just remember that you pay no closing with DVC but will usually pay about $450 resell.

Here is a link to a Yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dvcrent/
"This group is for renting and selling your Disney Vacation Club (DVC)points."
Also check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dvctalk as Shontell who used to work at The Timeshare Store is their new sponser.
We recently purchased a resale that was listed on TUG. We just contacted a title company in Florida and they did everything and all went well. :)
Good luck!
