I am looking for a photo site where I can upload photos but keep them private. By that I mean, for example, I have photos of my son's baseball team. I want to share them with the other team parents, but I don't want the publicly accessible. I don't think they would appreciative of me making pictures of their kids open to everyone.

I would like to send out a link and maybe a password for access.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks..

You can use sites like Zenfolio or Smugmug. You and put the photos under a password. I use Zenfolio and have used the password controls in the past without ant problems.

Like said, smugmug and zenfolio are the more common sites to do that. I've been a smugmug user since '05. It's a great service and really easy to set a gallery to private and lock it with a password.

I use fotki.com, you can set albums public/private/password protected as you see fit.

I think Photobucket even allows you to do the password thing.

Another vote for Smugmug - have been using for 5 years or so and very pleased with the features and service. It is a pay site (I believe Zenfolio is as well, but can't comment about the others). Not sure which free sites allow this functionality.

If you choose to go this route and want a coupon code (I think it saves you $10 for the first year), let me know and I'll send one your way.

I use Flickr for this. You can give out guest passes backed on sets.

I am on the fence about smugmug... doing the free trial right now. I want to back up my pics, but now thinking about backing up music, etc. as well. I like the functionality of smugmug, just not sure what to do with my other files.

Would you be able to share a coupon code with me? I would appreciate it. :yay:

And another vote for SmugMug. I've been using them for a few years now. I have the mid-level membership (had the pro where I could set my own prices, but I wasn't selling enough to justify the cost). I am my son's soccer team photographer and I lock a gallery down with a password. The parents and anyone they want to give the password to (ie family) have access to all my photos that I post. They can purchase prints through SmugMug, and download them to do what they want with them. It makes it easier on everyone as I don't have to email them out and they can take what they want. At the end of the season, I will ask permission to use some of the photos to showcase my work, open up the gallery but keep it so no one can download/print any of the photos.

On another note, if you use Lightroom, you can upload the photos right to SmugMug from it. Since I just got LR, I haven't played around with it too much, but you can tag your photos (ie names) and in SmugMug you may be able to search by keywords, making it easier for parents to find photos of just their kids. I take a lot of photos and organize them by game. It's a lot to go through! If anyone has done this, please clue me in on how to search by keyword so I can share with the parents!

I use photobucket, and make my albums private. Good luck choosing the right thing for you!

I use Zenfolio. Have been using them for years now.

Backing up music is pretty easy. You don't need online things for that. Burn a DVD and you have tons of music saved. Just my opinion.

Zenfolio has total password protection available. I take photos of Little League tourneys and alway have them password protected for the parents.

In case you are interested, my referral code is here: 6MB-DMX-A2G

Depending on how much you want to upload, SugarSyncSugarSync starts you out with 5 gigs free and you can get an extra 3 gigs free by getting friends to sign up. You can obviously also buy bigger storage if you'd like.

I have used and are very happy with smugmug.. For other backups if you have only computer drives (ie: not network drives) i use carbonite for other backups (including backups of pics that are also on smugmug). I'm also checking out mypcbackup for regular backups. The network drives are what cost to back up...But if attached to your computer there are many things out there.

I've been using Photobucket since 2004, and have been very happy with them. all of my albums are public, but I have the option to make them private. Every time I create a new album, I am asked if I would like to make it public (which they recommend) or private (with the ability to show it to up to 25 people). Photobucket is free, but I choose to pay a yearly fee to get more space, because I have A LOT of photos and video there.

I would consider creating a private group on Facebook for the team and only allowing the other parents to join it.

I have photobucket and I'm able to keep them private on there. Theres an option.

I use Zenfolio, they are fantastic, from what I here smugmug is also great, I would personally advise against using facebook for the following reason, according to there usage agreement, by uploading photos to facebook you are giving them the right to use your photos in any way they want, so even though they may be in a closed group, if facebook should decide to use one of your photos in advertising, the privacy you wanted no longer exists

Thanks for the insight... I was thinking the same about Facebook.... They do nothing that isn't in their interest.... Same as Google. Sure they offer their new Google Drive (cloud service) but if you read their Terms of Service you will find that your files are your files, but they can do what they want with them..... No thanks!

What does Zenfolio say about who has rights to your files?

I personally use photobucket for private photos.
Sadly, just graduating college means I don't have the money to pay for any of the other services. :( But, I've never had problems with using Photobucket.
