I am a newbie to WDW and the boards. Can you please tell me if "private dining" is just a fancy name for room service?

Thanks!!

Welcome to the DIS! Depending on who is talking about private dining, it can be room service as in "private in room dining", but here is some info on a different kinds of "private" dining at WDW. I'm not sure that they still offer this, but some of what used to be available was:

Grand Floridian Private Dinner
The Grand Floridian will create a private dining experience for couples, with views of the fireworks and a personal butler to attend to all your needs.

The dinners usually take place outside in the alcove area overlooking the Seven Seas Lagoon, and dessert is timed to coincide with the Wishes fireworks at Magic Kingdom. You can order off of the private dining menu, or for a 25% surcharge, order from any of the Grand Floridian's fantastic restaurants (Narcoossees, Citricos, etc.).

This standard Private Dining meal includes a multi-course dinner and one bottle of wine or champagne. Depending on your specific food and beverage selections, the dinner usually costs around $200 plus 6.5% tax and gratuity.

Contact (407) 824-2578 at least seven days in advance to schedule a private dinner at the Grand Floridian.

Or as in:
Book the Grand1, a fabulous 45-foot yacht with private dining and butler service. It accommodates up to 13 people. The cost is $400 an hour plus any catering. A captain is included in the price. Call (407) 824-2682 for reservations.

Money talks at WDW, and you can have some fabulous treats depending on how much you want to spend! :goodvibes

Private dining to me is what the previous poster indicated. I've never done it myself but would love to try it someday.:)

My DH and I did the Private Dining at the Grand Floridian on our honeymoon back in 2000. It was very luxurious for us, as we're pretty simple people. We placed our order with in-room dining. When the time for dinner came, a butler came to our door, set up our table with white linens, silver, china and crystal. He served us each course, but he didn't hover. He would leave and return giving us enough time to savor each course but not feel rushed or waiting impatiently for the next.

It was unlike anything I have ever done. We did this in our room - we had a view of Cinderella Castle from our room, so it was very romantic. But you can arrange to have your private dining experience almost anywhere. The above poster gave GREAT info.

I hope you enjoy your experience if you decide to go for it.
