Private Cabanas at Magic Kingdom: Last Day to Rent One - February 17, 2017

I like Pete's idea for a WDW version of Club 33 MUCH more as a "premium" experience revenue maker (even though there is NO way I'd buy into it). I certainly don't begrudge anyone who wants these premium add-ons and can afford them. I wish the tents weren't so ugly. I hope the "reserved viewing" doesn't take away from public viewing spaces.

The cabanas smack of desperation on Disney's part...but I'm sure those who partake will enjoy them.

Most won't but all they need is a few groups each day who do to be successful. We are a tiny fraction of guests on DIS and folks here are already booking.

The After Hours took a lot more guests and I honestly think it would have been a hit if they marketed it and got the price point right to begin with. They didn't do either. After Hours can be a huge hit at DHS and AK once new Lands open.

We did the After Hours and was completely worth it to us.

Well if I am being honest, if I had been around when they had the After Hours and I could afford it, I would've done it in a heartbeat because it really would've been great for us. But alas, I wasn't in that position, so that is that. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it just felt like a money-grabbing scheme (much like almost everything else they seem to be doing these days).

- I have no interest in a pool, rarely use them.
- Someone who booked was told they have A/C.
- I don't want to waste travel time, especially to VWL in addition to my rest time.
- Some of our party will continue to tour while one will wait with member who needs a break.
- Great for those short stints of time a small child might need to regroup.
- Nice place to feed or change a baby.
- Great if you have an elder member who wants to rest while rest keep going.

There are many reasons this is a better option than a hotel room.
I have heard no AC no fans.

I've heard Club 33 type places will come to each WDW park for the 50th.

As you say, things can change, but that is a horrible excuse. Why did they introduce Jingle Cruise then? Yes its still basically the same attraction, just with some Christmas decorations and jokes thrown in there, but I am sure tourists would appreciate the layover ever holiday season. I am a tourist and I definitely would!

BTW, getting back on topic, I hate the cabana idea, but my thoughts aside, I feel that just like with the Extra Hours thing from a few months back, this won't get too far because most people will not be able to afford it/will see the use in it.
Jingle cruise can be done over night. The haunted mansion overlay closes the ride for about a month. That's a big difference.

I hear you, but I think a money grab is when they take away something then bring it back for a charge - say if they start directly charging for FP+ (like Universal does), or at this point start charging for Magical Express (we all expected it to charge after it was up and running but now would be different), or start charging to deliver you purchases to your hotel room .... I will even say that I was mad when the "deck" we always used at the water parks (great for my DS who is disabled) became a "paid location" aka cabana. In that case they did take something away something free and make it pay

But this to me is no different than VIP Tours, overpriced Character Breakfasts, Dessert Parties, Early Morning Magic .... it's an extra, it doesn't impact my day but to the person who purchases, it enhances their day.

I know one argument that gets fuzzy is EMH. These didn't exist, then they added them for $$, then they were free. Open parks cost money, EMH probably make next to nil. I could see this changing if the bean counters can not justify in lieu of the After Hours.

I think the difference here is we can all see it loud and clear - mini tent city. And the temporary look is "commercial" looking. If they are a hit and stay, like I said before I really hope they build something permanent that fits into the land. Their looks alone could be a selling point to guests in the park.

For just a little more you could have a studio at BLT for Christmas night. For less you can have a studio at VWL for a NYE night. So an actual room on property that you can go and lay down in with AC and a pool. I guess not for 8 people though. This only makes sense with 8 adults who are all chipping in.

Standard rooms and studios at MK resorts do not hold more than 5 people and in order to cover the timeframe that comes with the cabana, you would have to book a room for 2 nights at one of the resorts. So, probably still cheaper to book the cabana.

Passing along some information for the FYI file....

I made a cabana reservation a few days ago for this Sunday. Today I received a very nice call from Disney looking to confirm the details of my reservation. Specifically, our estimated arrival time, the spelling of our names (presumably for the mickey ears), any food allergies, and any other special requests. Since I have a toddler they asked if we wanted a pack n' play and more baby-oriented food options. Since one of the appeals for us is a place for DD to maybe take a quick nap, we're going to give the pack n' play a try (chances of her actually sleeping there is another discussion). But, I thought it was a nice amenity to offer none-the-less.

They also wanted to confirm if we'd be interested in the reserved viewing area for the parade and fireworks. I was told that a reserved spot is only available for the day parade (FOF), not the night parade (I'm going on a MVMCP day, so there is a holiday parade that night). This conflicts with what I was told when I asked the question a few days ago, but this guy seemed more "in the know" than the CM I made the reservation with. Honestly I'm a bit disappointed about this as one of the other major appeals for us was a reserved spot for the holiday party parade, not necessarily FOF. However, I'm keeping an open mind about the conflicting info...not saying it's right or not but I have more tolerance with Disney on hastily introduced new test offerings and CM's not having full/accurate info.

We DO have access to a reserved area for the MVMCP fireworks that evening.

The CM did not have information as to the exact viewing location for either the FOF parade or MVMCP fireworks.

Like I said in a PP, I'll be sure to come back and post about our experience when we get back next week.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Just got off the phone with them to see about reserving one. Here's what I got:
  • It's only at MK
  • Not sure of any type of air conditioning ( he assumed there would be a fan of some sort but not confirmed)
  • Refrigerator with water and drinks
  • Personalize Mickey Ears
  • Complimentary sanitizer, sun-screen, and insert repellent
  • Food delivery at an additional cost
  • One time delivery of theme park ice cream novelties

Hey, if WDW can get some people to waste their $$ on a tent, then more power to them. Sorry but MK has a lot of places to rest and relax. When our DDs were younger and napped in their stroller, we had no issues finding a nice spot and have a snack while resting. I think the most we spent was $20, and it was a snack of our choice.

Now I have seen everything. Cabanas in a theme park?
If you are going to make a place to recharge and relax why not make it for everyone and not charge for it? Construct a "haven" for guests to put their feet up and relax. Tom Sawyers island would be an ideal place for one to go if they redid it with more covered seating and a small concession stand. Having it out in the middle of a theme park is silly.

Why not utilize prime park space for more attractions?

Why? Because at its core this is vanity marketing. It is important that these cabanas are seen, and therefore in turn, envied by all visitors. I understand that some people will find some practical value in the cabanas. However, there is no shortage of marketing directed towards those who will pay for "perks." This will become more about vanity than practical usage and there will be fierce competition to reserve one.

The blueprint for this is already in place. Anyone who has been on a DCL cruise and visited Castaway Cay can see the very expensive but always filled cabanas. Spend some time on the DCL board and you will find people lining up for the privilege of overpaying for a cabana. Yes, people reserve at the earliest opportunity and then celebrate as if they have won the lottery when granted the privilege of paying $650 per day for a few otherwise inexpensive perks.

I don't get it, but rest assured the Theme Parks Board will soon have its share of "cabana brag" threads where those fortunate enough to "score" a cabana will engage in self-congratulatory activities while pitying the less fortunate.

For you this is wasteful. But perhaps not to others.

We all choose where to allocate our funds. What you find wasteful another may fund useful. I find car payments wasteful and will never purchase another new vehicle. Ever. But I don't ridicule others who find the money spent on a new vehicle is worth it.

There was a time when I could not have justified all meals eaten out while on vacation, but I was happy to vacation. I never was critical if others had discretionary funds to spend where i chose not to.

At Magic kingdom right now
- the tents are camouflaged and concealed by shrubs, if you're looking for them you will only see the top of them
- I decided to walk into the area since there was no sign of no entry, all 4 tents were occupied by guests, I could see a guy taking a nap with the "door" closed, so assuming it does have a/c since it's 83 right now
- another tents door was open, got a couple of pics, they don't look horrible inside, the fridge was full of sodas and water, the snacks were small bags of chips, goldfish, doritos, fritos. The fruit basket was placed on the table , medium size.
Long, L shaped couch, rug and I could see the locker
-Plaids were all around but didn't tell me smudging when I was taking pictures
Will post the pics when I get home tonight

Thanks, yulilin! You're such a great spy! ;)

:rotfl:At those prices there better be armed guards posted at the entrance to my shanty, considering you can't even step foot on the bridge to get a look at BoG without a reservation.

ah ok. Those are the tents they use for the characters for Star Wars A Galaxy Far Far Away. When you said Star Wars stage I thought it was the JT training one
Well I was saying on that end--couldn't remember the name of the movie star thing LOL I didn't notice those tents when we were there in August. Sorry for the false alarm!!:upsidedow

But this stuff bothers me. If Disney put the time and energy into new guest experiences (whether they be rides, little shows like streetmosphere actors or things like how Luxo Jr. the lamp used to come out next to TSMM) as they do on these paid for extras...I think everyone could have a much better park experience. Seriously, how much time and effort and employees do they have on the 'find ways to make us buckets of extra cash while we offer the bare minimum and don't really do anything to increase park enjoyment for everyone'?

I agree.

Equality is a good thing. Kids need to feel EQUAL in a Disney park!

How awful for the families like us - who will never see the inside of those structures due to $$$!!!

I don't think Walt would be too happy either!

Putting Club33 aside, look at the way they charged back in Walt's day. Ride tickets, anyone? Free to enter, but you'd better have parents willing and able to put up some money so you can actually DO anything. When we went to DL (once with dad, once with mom) as kids we weren't with adults ready to put up enough money for us to truly have excellent days, so we got less than other kids. We were not equal. Now the way they charge for entrance is more equal; anyone who is in the park paid about the same as anyone else to get in, and all the rides are available to them.

It looks...muggy. And humid. I know - beta testing. But, I sure would not be in the test group as-is.

And since my family seems to get freezing temperatures whenever we go (or it seems like it, at least), I hope for heating!

Will the row of green porta potties be in before Thanksgiving to accompany One Man's Tent City?

LOL.

Sarcastic and not adding anything to the discussion

Are you sure it was sarcastic?

Do you really believe that or ?????

Have you traveled in Europe? Pay-restrooms abound.

Imagine your kids saying to you "mummy can we go and ride Space Mountain?" And having to say "no sweetie... it's time to go and sit in the tent now". Imagine their little faces

So true. I have the personality where I MUST find value. Growing up poor did that to me. (did it to my brother, too, but he is WAY more successful financially than I am, so his version of value is different...he finds no value in a themepark, but does find value in his Maserati that costs the earth to fill with gas and you can't even legally drive it the way it's meant to be driven)

When we booked the Castaway Cabana that one time, I stayed in it. The whole day except for lunchtime. We paid for the cabana and I was going to get the value from it, darnit. I did spend about 2 hours on "our" beach.

DH and DS went off to use the included snorkel rentals and the inflatables, but I coudln't bring myself to do it. Even though they were included, I knew the rental cost of them, and they didn't come close to what the structure's "cost" was. So I stayed in or near the structure.

I almost hated it. I won't be booking a Castaway cabana again. DH and DS would want it booked, but they aren't the ones booking things. :)

I was told they do feature heating/cooling depending on the weather.

Whew.

If these become available at Epcot, I most definitely will book one for Marathon Sunday at Epcot.

Also, I see no difference in people trying to find "shares" for these like they do for fireworks cruises.

:) Now, see, a share during a solo trip, I can see. Let me know if you'll book one over Princess and want people for a share. ;)

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed up the wazoo for this, but I think the idea of napping in a tent in the middle of a theme park as an adult is bizarre. If I'm that tired in the middle of the day, I'd go back to the resort and sleep in my room.

If there are health issues, I can see it.

But if I, a fairly healthy adult, am falling asleep like that, I'm heading to the doctor. In fact falling asleep anytime he sat down was the big HUGE sign telling us that DH was in trouble. He passes out *anywhere* when his blood sugar is too high. When I hear of accidents with bus drivers or train conductors I hope they (if they survived) are sent to get their blood sugar checked, because DH seriously would sit down and his head would go to his chest. It wasn't good.

Added: Share, December 25, 2016 MK Cabana, Christmas Day - 3 spaces available

:) Hubby was tempted, but our trip is too short and he wants to explore the resort for our almost-3-daytimes instead. (like I said, DH loves this kind of stuff!)

Why would you need to say no?

Because some of us have personalities where if you bought something you USE something. So if you got that tent, you're going to use it, darnit.

I'm upset with the direction Disney is taking, not that people are taking advantage of a service that Disney has devised.

YES.

WDW is a destination in itself, while DL is part of a vacation and more targeted at locals and shorter stays.

Not to me! When we go to DL we pretty much go to DL. When we go to WDW we see family, we go on a cruise, we stay up at Uni, we go all over the place.

And I meet travelers at DL often; I very rarely meet "locals".

Jingle cruise can be done over night. The haunted mansion overlay closes the ride for about a month. That's a big difference.

Exactly.

I still think it's all bogus for why they don't put it in at WDW. I think they should. I used to be very against the NBC overlay, but then I realized that it got my son on a ride he was very frightened of. Jack Skellington made it friendly for him. Now he'll ride traditional HM, but he really prefers NBC HM.

I have traveled extensively in Europe including England, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, & in Hong Kong in China. I have never seen a pay toilet.
