On New years eve my 15 year old daughter finally got her wish for a new puppy. she has always wanted a "toy" dog...someone small enough that could be in her room with her. She got a Chihuahua Pomeranian mix two pound bundle of joy! She fell instantly in love with this little sweetheart. Sarah has suffered from some pretty severe depression over the last couple of years, she has suffered alot of loss, the death of her oldest brother, her fathers deployment and injury in Iraq and than dad not coming home but moving straight to California when he returned, along with moving and missing her friends from Idaho, and this little doll lifted her mood so amazingly that even my friends were commenting on it!
About a week into having her we noticed that she was limping and took her to the vet who sent us to a specialist where Sarah was told that her baby has a "grade 4 luxating patella" a knee that is so out of place that her bones are twisting wrong and without surgery she will not be able to walk on that left leg. She cried for hours...my heart broke for her...
Sarah has decided to write a blog about her life with her puppy...this is going to be her "therapy"....keeping hope alive for Priscilla.....

PM if you'd like a link to her blog :)

Sarah also has a learning disability so this is truly amazing that she has taken on this task of writing.... her "king of rock" post is probably my favorite.

I'm sure she would appreciate some words of comfort as we try and figure out how to best help "Cilla", just knowing that someone else is reading about her baby would lift her spirits too....

What a cutie :) Animals are amazingly resilient. Sarah should be proud she has taken on this responsibility and is caring for her.

Cute puppy.

Ask the vet if you can make payments.

We have been in touch with the person we got her from, they are just some family who hadn't had their dogs spayed/neutered and ended up with a litter of puppies so no recourse their. The vet won't take payments so we are looking into other options. I have contacted some websites that offer financial assistance and am waiting to hear back but from what I've read on their websites they have long waiting lists. Hoping to get all my tax info back soon so I can get my refund check....in the meantime we just love on her alot!!!

Our lab had a luxating patella in his right knee. He underwent surgery 6 weeks ago yesterday. His recovery is amazing. We go for x rays next week. Hopefully he will soon have run of the house and be able to go out in the yard by himself. A few dissers have also told me their dogs had this surgery and they are so glad they did.

Are you having the surgery done? Good luck!

I had to remove the link because on her blog she had a link to a site called chipin that was helping her raise funds for her puppy....didn't want to break any dis rules. We don't have the surgery scheduled right now as the vet we took her to quoted us almost 3500 ...a lot out of the budget range right now....we're working on some creative solutions

You might want to get a second estimate for the vet. My border collie had the same surgery about 3 or 4 years ago and it was only $800 and that included x-rays on her hips while under anesthesia. And my vets are amazing, just reasonably priced.

Good luck to you, your daughter and her puppy! :grouphug:

Does your Vet take CareCredit?
I work for a Dentist and we take it here. The application is the same as applying for a credit card and they can do as much as 18 months interest free. My Vet also takes it. You can apply online.

Cute puppy!

Considering your daughter has a hard time with writing, she did an amazing job writing all those posts on her blog in just one day.

I hope you are able to find a vet that let's you make payments.

If that's her real name in that post about facebook, make sure you go & delete it.

we have tw chia - poms....haven't had any issues with them but I would be getting another opinion, that seems awfully high

thats actually a link to my facebook page...
and yes she did an amazing job on her blog, she spent HOURS on it last night. I guess she had a couple of homework hour classes in school yesterday and since she is caught up with her work, she was writing notes for her blog!
Her english teacher is giving her extra credit for writing it!

Have you considered going to a veterinary school at a local university. My cocker spaniel had to have her eye balls removed due to cancer and the LSU Vet School was reasonable and very good. Good luck with the pup!

In your daughter's blog (read it before the link was removed) she wrote that you got the dog from a breeder. :confused3

Anyway, have you been able to get estimates from other vet offices? From what some posters have said your estimate seems high.

Call me skeptical but this sounds like someone might be looking for donations from DISers to help with the "dog" she did or didn't get from a breeder that needs an expensive surgery that her daughter, who has a hard time with writting, blogs about in several well written posts in one day...etc, etc, etc.

If true, my apologies, but my hinky meter is going off.

sorry you feel that way...she spent hours on the blog and most of her school day as well (her teacher did give her some help)....and with spell check it does wonders. Her thought process has never been the issue...her learning difficulty is with spelling when she uses the computer it all comes together for her. She got the puppy from a local family (not a "breeder" in the classic sense)...I did remove the link as I forgot she had a link to her other site....my bad....and I do mean that I feel horrible that someone would think that....on the BRIGHT SIDE I have gotten some GREAT advise here today...I have called some other vets as well as the vet school and am being told that we should be able to get this done for much less than the fancy high priced big city vet and we should be able to make payments. THIS advise is why I came to the DIS...because sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees....who else has been there done that...am I getting ripped off with this quote...can someone ENCOURAGE my daughter (I'm the mom I have to say nice things) Sarah will start a job this weekend cleaning horse stalls to earn the money as well as a garage sale the following weekend...she is being responsible for her puppy. the link on her blog is for family and friends....

Call me skeptical too. My vet takes credit cards. Maybe you can just charge the costs instead of asking others to pay for it.
