The number is a "back up" way to confirm your reservation if they don't find you by your last name. I would carry them with you to be safe.

You usually don't need it but it's wise to carry it with you in case. Sometimes the name on the reservation gets butchered and they have a hard time finding you. The confirmation number then helps the restaurant find you on their records
