i haven't printed off any pics in such a long time. i'm finally going to print some for an upcoming scrapbooking workshop i'll be going to. the last time i sent them to a photo place to print, they came back all messed up. i edited/cropped some before uploading them, and i guess i messed up the dimensions. how do i make sure the pics are coming back to me correct? there are a few pics i'd like to crop down before printing, but i dont want them to come back all messed up. any help?

You need to set the aspect ratio of your crop to the aspect ration of the print your ordering. Otherwise they are going to crop it again to make it fit what you ordered.

So, if you crop your original 4x6 picture to a 3x3 picture and then order it as a 4x6 print, they are going to cut an inch off 2 opposite sides to make it fit.

If you wanting 4x6 constrain the crop to your original size, if your looking for different sizes then set the crop to that size.

What editing software are you using and what size do you want to print?

The problem is that photos are rectangles and rectangles come in different shapes, not just different sizes. Some are tall and skinny and others are short and fat (no comment which category I fall into). The shape of the rectangle that comes out of your camera may or may not match the shape of the photo you want to print.

The shape of the rectangle is measured in terms of the ratio of the long side to the short side. So a 4x6 print has a ratio of 1.5 (6 divided by 4 = 1.5) but a 5x7 has a ratio of 1.4 (7/5=1.4). So if you have a picture file and want to print it as both a 4x6 and a 5x7, something will have to be cut off because your 4x6 is more tall and skinny, while the 5x7 is more short and fat. And an 8x10 with a ratio of 1.25 would be shorter and fatter still, cutting even more off your photo.

Some photo editing programs have an option within the crop tool where you can tell it what size you want to print. Then the crop box will have the proper ratio you need. If your software does not have that, it should tell you how large your photo is in pixles. If you crop your photo so that it is 1,800 pixles wide, you would need to make it 2,700 pixles tall to get a 4x6 print and 2,520 tall to get a 5x7 and only 2,250 tall to get an 8x10. Your actual pixels will vary, but as long as you get the ratio right, your photos should come out just fine.

how do i make sure i do it right? is there a way to check the size? sorry! it's prob a dumb question, but i really messed it up the last time!

i have microsoft digital image suite 2006...and not really much clue on how to use it! LOL!! i know how to use the red eye and that's about it!! LOL!
i've seen a box pop up before letting me change the pixles and such, but i'm not sure what it means. i want to print either 3x5 or 4x6. i have the canon s5. i guess i need to play around more with the editing software, and see if i can figure it out. i think i'm overanalyzing...but how do i figure out the ratios? i'm lost!

bumping back up....
hoping someone can help me figure out how to check the size. thanks!

Just edit and don't crop, upload to snapfish and you can see how you can crop each photo on there when you pick the size you want. You can then move the crop box to where you want to fit it in the picture.
