printer issue with new laptop

I hope someone can help me because I am about to pull my hair out!

I have a new laptop and can't seem to get it to communicate with my printer. I installed the printer driver and printed a test page with no problem. Then I printed an email. Again, no problem. That was it. Haven't been able to print to it since. I have gone through the troubleshooting guide in the XP print wizard and also the HP website.

When I originally installed the printer I used the default port LPT1. That didn't work so I changed it to USB001 and that's when I was able to print the test page and email.

I have tried updating the printer properties from spooling to printing direct to printer. That doesn't work either.

When I try to print something, it goes to the printer queue with status "printing" but never prints. I eventually get a "document failed to print" error and have to delete it from the print queue. It locks up my printer where I can't turn it off with the power button. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to reset it.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario running Windows XP and the printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 1170Cse (about 8 years old but still in perfect running order!). The printer driver was available in XP although it couldn't find it through the wizard. I had to pick it from a list and install it from there.

Anyone have any suggestions? Please?!

I would suggest getting the driver from HP. A lot of times the driver that comes with XP is crap.

Or take advantage of the really cheap printer prices these days and get a new one.

I'll be watching this thread since I'm having issues with the same thing. popcorn::

First off, Please scotch tape your hair back on! :thumbsup2

Is your printer directly hooked up to your Laptop? Or or you going thru WIFI?
If it printed once....it will print again!!!!!

In 'My Computer/Control panel/Printer and Faxes" do you see the printer icon for your printer...and more importantly is there a "check" mark?

Tried that. HP doesn't have the driver available because it is included with XP.

I had no problems printing with it with my old laptop which also ran XP. But my old laptop had a parallel port. I'm using a USB adapter with this one. Could that make a difference?

Printer is hooked up directly to laptop with a parallel to USB adapter. Yes, I see the printer icon in Printer and Faxes and it has a check mark next to it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I also thought if I was able to print to it once I should be able to get it to print again. Any other suggestions?

I PM'd you my Phone #(if you want)......this will be way easier then posting notes back & forth

shut the printer off first! Then power it back on!
this is a connectivity issue! Not a driver issue!
