princess questions from daughter

My daughter is hoping to see lots of princesses and fairies at DL.

She has already asked me how can Pocahontas still be alive if she lived so long ago.

I can almost guarantee if we see Rapunzel, my daughter will ask why is her hair long and blonde, when Flynn cut it off at the end of the movie and it should be short and brown.

I think once she asked me if those were the real princesses when we will see them. She also asked me where they live there, if they are all in the same castle, as she knows there are different castles in the movies.

Do any of your younger ones (boys or girls) ask such questions and how do you answer them when visiting?

I went for the first time when I was 6, and I handed Mickey Mouse a note (written in my autograph book) that said "Don't you get hot inside that suit?". Nobody had told me anything about them not being who they were "supposed" to be. Kids are wiser than we think, they just don't let a bit of knowledge or a hunch get in the way of that Disney magic!

I got away with a lot of stuff by calling it "Disney Magic". A year ago at our last trip my oldest was 5 and I think she was too caught up in the excitement of all of it to question much. But the characters get questions a lot and they have good answers.

my girls are 2 and 4 we just took our first trip in Sept 2011. My oldest ask me why the castle was changing colors. I told her Im not sure lets go see if we can ask Cinderella. So we went to see the Princesses, it was late and we walked right in there was no line. She asked Cinderella why the castle was changing colors and the answer was Tinkerbell sprinkled it with pixie dust. She was so happy with that answer. It worked out great I didnt have to make anything up and she was super happy.

now that we are back and I have the pictures developed. She has been asking some questions. She notice Pocahantus and Jamine were played by the same actress. And she notice Tinkerbell was differant all 3 times she had her picture taken with her. I just kind of denied it. But I did have to admit that the costume charactors were not real. But she didnt really care

When people say they are waiting to take their kids to Disney until they are old enough to remember it, I am saddened, because they are missing some of the best years. For by the time they are old enough in the parents minds to remember Disney, the kids are too old for parts of the park and some of the chance for magic is gone. Part of it is them knowing that the person playing Cinderella is an actress and not actually Cinderella.

When you have young kids, take them places aimed at young kids, like Disney and Legoland. When you children are older, then go to National Parks, historical places, and other amusement parks aimed at older kids, with maybe a Disney vacation sprinkled in.

there is pixie hollow where you can meet tinkerbell and all of her fairy friends... they rotate which ones are in there through out the day. There is also princee fantasy fair back by toon town... they rotate the princesses out through out the day. Raposal has her own home in fantsyland and the melina from brave is going to be by it a small world soon if she isn't already there.

We took our DGD to WDW when she was 5. Had a wonderful time meeting all the princesses, and have pictures to last a lifetime. We went to DLR when she was 6, and again had a great time, meeting Tink and lots of others. So when she was 7, we took her back to DLR. I suggested we go to Princess Fantasy Faire, which we had somehow missed the previous year. Her answer? "Nah, those are just adults in princess costumes."

I was crestfallen.

Mamas, don't let your kids grow up before taking them to Disney!

Now see, maybe my kids just want to believe but we took them when they were 6 and 9 for the first time and they loved meeting the Princesses. They may have known they weren't the real thing but we still ate at AG multiple times so they could meet them. DD12 has a book she took one year with stories about the Princesses, she asked each Princess to sign their story, she will have that book forever. In fact, when DBF asked "how can Ariel be here in her Grotto and over in DL at the same time?" Our youngest said "it's that Disney Magic" and that was the end of that. lol They still like to meet characters and I tell DD15 all the time that she could be Tinkerbell if she wanted because she's very small and petite, just like Tink should be.

Just a couple of spelling errors....it's Merida from Brave and Rapunzel. I'm not sure how much longer Rapunzel will be there tho, I thought they had already removed the hair from her tower.

There is also Ariel's Grotto in DCA, there you can meet 5 Princesses and eat a pretty decent meal IMO.

I use the "Disney Magic" respose too. If my DD asked if that princess was real, I would say "she looked real to me!" If she asked where she lived, I'd say "why don't you ask her when you meet her -- I think she lives in a castle!" Or I'd just say "what do you think?" Sometimes our kids don't really want a straight answer from us, a shattering of the myth. Sometimes if we just ask what they think, they'll tell us!

I have always had the amazing ability to forget that Mickey, Donald, etc., are people dressed up. To me, they are real, and I am 65 years old!
It must have rubbed off on my daughters, now adults, because they never questioned anything at Disney.
But if they had, I would have told them the truth, just like I did when they asked about Santa. They have always known that Mommy would never lie to them, no matter how small the matter is.
As they were growing up and they read the princess stories, I always made sure they understood they were just stories. Maybe that's why they never asked me if the princesses were real when they saw them at Disney.
But each parent must decide for themselves how much to tell their kids.

Over lunch I asked my daughter who is now 6 how it is that the princesses can all be at Disneyland. She told me a very long involved story about how they have castles close to Disneyland but not so close that you can see them from the park. Then they get up really early to do their hair and make-up to come meet all the kids. On the nights when they have to stay late at Disneyland they bring their sleeping bags and stay in the castle.

I love kids. They fill in the blanks for you!

I personally was wondering why Rapunzel didn't have short brown hair.

I like the long hair better, though.

First, the cast members will have an appropriate answer for your daughter, so you could always go the route of, "that's a great question! Why don't we ask them at Disneyland?"
As for Rapunzel, my daughter (4 at the time) asked her why her hair was long and blonde again. She said that it had grown out since Flynn cut it. When he cut it, she learned that the magic was inside her all the time and that's why it was blonde again.

Cute questions! I love the last OP's response when her DD asked Rapunzel about her hair. Maybe you can tell your daughter to ask them directly, I'm sure they have wonderful answers

I'm like Nannyz, I turn into a kid at Disney and forget myself that they are not the real character. My sister still gives me a hard time about how excited I got when I saw Mary Poppins for the first time, I was jumping up and down and I was in my late 20's/early 30's. You are never to old to believe.....

Rapunzel told one of my dear friends little girls that the fairies used some pixie dust to make her hair long and blonde again... Pixie Dust cures all of those questions!!

Things have been really crazy at work since we moved into a new building with many things not working correctly. The boss sent out a memo that when she could find her magic wand she would get everything fixed.

So of course I thought I would get her one when I was in DLR. We went the first of May.

I was comparing a couple of the magic wands trying to decide if I really wanted to spend $25+ for a joke for the boss when I heard a quite "May I help you" over my shoulder.

It was Tinker bell. I told her I was trying to find a magic wand for my boss for work, that I could not come back to work if I didn't bring one back that would solve all her problems.

Tink folder her hands and said "Oh my, they only work in the land" and then floated off. I think I laughed for a good 10 mins. I still chuckle when I think of it. She was so quick with the reply. I'm sure she has heard that ? many times but it was the right comment at the right time and actually made magic for me.

My DH was so funny when he met the princesses. After he took our DD to fantasy faire (DS and I went on Splash), I asked him which princesses they saw. He said "a red-headed one, Snow White, and another one with black hair and blue, yellow, and red dress." Huh? I said the last one was Snow White. No, he said, Snow White has blonde hair, hence her name "Snow White." I asked if her blonde hair was long or up, and if her dress was pink or blue. He was so surprised that I knew the colors of the dresses! Uh, where have you been dad? The princesses are on a gazillion cups, plates, T shirts, and nightgowns at our house! He said his Snow White had her hair up and a blue dress. So I told him that was Cinderella and he was so surprised that Cinderella had blonde her. I told him that the red-headed one was Ariel, and he just look puzzled. For next trip, we will need a mini-princess lesson before we go.

My hubby actually is the one who points out all the differences in the movies! Drives me batty, haha. Like, how the Beast turns into a man at the end but is a beast everywhere you look, the Rapunzel hair thing and a few others. I just tell him not to think too hard about it and just enjoy it!
