Prince sings the FOO Fighters at the Superbowl

The Lore is that Prince was not happy with the Foo Fighters cover of Darling Nikki, thus the song last night. I tried googling for an article to than affect, but so far haven't been able to find something besides some posts on a Prince message board.
Found this in an old Rolling Stones article:
But ask him if he's heard the Foo Fighters' version of "Darling Nikki" and Prince, who a minute earlier said he never listens to the radio ("When I want to hear new music, I go make some"), replies by describing a Hawaii radio DJ's response to the Foos' cover. The DJ wondered if Prince had heard it--then said he couldn't care less if he had. "Just no respect," says Prince. "I wonder if that's the kind of thing the FCC would like to clean up, too."

So...does he like the cover? "No! I don't like anyone covering my work. Write your own tunes!" He says he got up in R&B singer Ginuwine's face for bungling the lyrics in a 1996 version of "When Doves Cry." "I was just busting on him to bust him, but I was a little serious: Have some respect, man. If anyone tried to cover 'Respect,' by Aretha? I would shoot them myself!"
Kinda ironic considering last night (oh and that Aretha Franklin's Respect is a remake as well).

As for Prince not performing his more "risque" songs, it had nothing to do with censors and everything to do with his religious beliefs at this time.

ETA: Howard Stern was given the song last week from Prince's Publicist, asking that he launch a discussion on the halftime show and debate what he would play. Howard didn't want to, but did end up playing the song, so I was pretty sure this song would show up in the halftime show.

Last night me and DH were analyzing why someone like Prince (who has loads of songs to choose from) would cover a Foo Fighters song - DH said that he wants to believe that Prince is a Foo Fighters/Nirvana fan.

After reading this article - I don't think Prince is a Foo Fighters fan.

Also interesting that he ended that set with "I've got another confession, my friend/I ain't no fool." ;) That of course is a change from "I've got another confession to make/I'm your fool"

Well it makes no sense. I've been a musician since the age of 6, I play guitar and piano, used to be real serious about it when I was younger, now just for fun, but I cant imagine Prince covering a song or a band that he "doesn't like for spite" or whatever. That makes absolutely no sense. First of all, him covering a song is honering the song/song writers, its not a diss. Second of all its at the Superbowl, the single largest stage in the world, if you are trying to diss someone you don't like, or get them back for covering my song, you don't do it at the superbowl and do it with your own redention on it that frankly I thought was a neat version. He wasn't trying to butcher it or anything.

I think he's full of it. Just like when he said "I was semi-serious" or whatever. He just makes out like it bothers him that someone covers his song. I bet if truth be told he is a big fan of the Foo Fighters. I know if I was doing it professionally not to mention as big of a star as Prince is, the last thing I would do is cover someone's song that I don't like of a band that I'm POd at. That doesn't make any sense at all. The only logical explanation is that he is a big fan, even if he won't admit it..

When we used to play for a living live, the last thing any of us wanted to do was play any song, artists etc., that we didn't like. Particularly when we played on any large stage or venue.

Okay--I thought I was living under a rock b/c that one song was one I had never heard him sing and didn't think was one of his original songs.

I'm only living under a pebble since I didn't know it was foo fighters.

I thought it was an excellent show and I am thoroughly impressed he sounded awesome singing Purple Rain last night as he was back when I had the little purple 45 of the song.

I must've been living under a BOULDER because I never heard of the Foo Fighters till this thread!! Known Prince since the very beginning, though!

I said that was the lore. I don't know if that is why Prince decided to do the song or not. Only Prince knows his true intentions. :) You are trying to think logically, I am not sure Prince thinks logically. :rotfl2: Perhaps he wanted to show that he could perform the song better? Who knows. Again, like I said, only Prince knows what he was thinking.

ETA: That was nearly four years ago, so a lot of things could have changed. Perhaps Prince was showing that he can still be relevant today. I would love to hear an explanation, but I am guessing we probably won't get one. LOL

Ah, but the last part of the Foo's version does say "I've got another confession my friend, I'm no fool."
I'm really not sure if it was a dig or whatever, but I have to agree, trying to think of the logical explanation is probably not going to bring any answers. :)

You should check them out they are really good if you are into rock. They're not really like Prince, although they are very melodic.

IMO I think Prince is just getting more into rock than he used to. That was why he was playing some blazing style lead guitar the whole time. He was a lot more rock last night than funk/dance type music that he may be known for a little more.
