Beats me but if it is any number greater than 0 it means it happens. If you are one of the victims it really doesn't matter if you are the only one, one of a thousand, or one of ten thousand.

Why do we do this on the dis? Are we really this "literally"? As a general rule guns are hard to get in the UK. Yes, we know that it happens but as a whole it is a very rare occasion.

Why do we feel the need on the dis, to of course always point out the "exception" to every general statement. We know, we know it happens.

To the UK posters: Do you think some of the backlash is because people did not know to be planning on paying for university and saving for it since the kids were little, like we do in the US? To me that would be a big issue. If they said they would start with minor increases and make it bigger each year and in 15 years go to the full increases (so that the generation hit with that at least has fair warning to save) it would be easier on people. I am just curious what some of you think. Is that a valid issues people have? Or am I just making things up to amuse myself?

The introduction of university fees and the inevitability of them rising over time has been known about for years. We set up specific investments to cover our three daughters university costs when they were young.
One of the problems is that universities are very badly run with very long holidays, only a few hours of lectures and a student mindset that they are having a three year holiday. Cutting courses to two years could be done quite readily, reducing the cost sharply and getting better value for money from the bricks and mortar as well as the teaching staff.

As for the attack on Charles and Camilla, it was obviously a mistake by the Metropolitan Police to not alter their planned route. These riots are usually commandered by "rent a mob" anarchists who contribute the most violence. We are experiencing freezing weather here; I would use water cannon to deter them.

Because some one earlier said there is no need for high profile figures, like the royal family, to have protection like bullet proofing on their cars. I have a friend in the Secret Service on one of the Presidential details and their entire job is to plan for the exception, not the general rule. In this case it is the mere possibility of something that is relevant, not the probability of it happening, and it should be the same for whomever is in charge of the royal family's protection.

There are probably less shoulder fired anti aircraft missiles in the US (excluding those used in the military of course) than there are guns in England yet part of his job is to plan for the possibility of one of them being used on the presidential motorcade or Air Force One. Again, it is the exception they plan and prepare for making it relevant.

In many situations I agree with you, don't highlight exceptions. In this case though it's the exceptions that are relevant. We aren't talking about the danger of Joe Public walking down the street (in which case I'd agree with you), we are talking about the protection of high profile officials. </>

Maybe not for you but the fees in the UK have never been as high as what they are in the US. Hence the outrage over here. Originally when the fees were introduced it was £1000 approx $1500 a year, with it increasing by £25 a year then universities were allowed to charge £3000 & now its been granted they can charge up to £9000 approx $14000 a year.

The main outrage is that many government ministers didn't pay anything to get their degree as up until the late 90's university degrees were free

It's a matter of what you're use to. People here in the states are freakin out because gas is over 3 bucks, over in Europe they think we're crazy because IN GENERAL (as in yes there may be exceptions) gas is expensive.

from the interviews on TV yesterday, kids tuition tripled (one kids tuition went fro 5K-15K) so while that may seem low to us, if you are use to paying $3 bucks a gallon for gas and it shot up to $9 bucks you might be a bit upset.

What we pay here in the US is irrelevant to the subject. I really doubt that college students and their parent are sitting around saying "Well, in the US they pay 3 times what we are being asked to pay so we all should just plaster a smile on our face and be happy about it".

It is a huge hike for them and to go from free to over $14000 in just over 10 years is probably devastating and unattainable to many.

Well no one is going to agree with me but i am glad they are protesting a hike in rates. I wish some people here in the US would protest largely against the waste and taxes and fees we have here. I also think very little of the royal family exvept for Dianas sons so while I am glad no one was hurt it doesn't upset me that they were a target.

I think the big difference is that in the UK, most people do not have long auto commutes to work. In the US many folks need to commute many miles to their jobs so the cost of gasoline becomes a different factor.

I hope that the UK finds a way to phase in the increase so those who have already started their education can finish.

That actually does happen in some places. I know of two small towns in Arkansas where the grads are guaranteed free tuition for college.

Tuition in the U.S. for a top private school is now over $50,000 a year.

Same can be said for burglary of any other crime. Just because "it happens" it doesn't mean that every measure should be tried, and laws enacted to deter it from happening as much as possible.

Interesting. Full time is generally 4 years in the USA. I went for a teaching cert which was a 5 year program--I had to get signed off on taking extra credits to pull it off in 4 years.

From the point of view of a UK DISer:

Students AND lecturers are annoyed because the fees are TREBLING. Not only that, but many Members of Parliament originally signed a document pledging never to increase tuition fees! Both sides of the political spectrum have been guilty of upsetting people, including my own political party, who have - I think - lost their way.

There have been rolling demonstrations all over the country. They closed down the centre of my little city a few days back, trapping me in the middle of it all. In London, Conservative Party Headquarters have been occupied by a few troublemakers. It's serious stuff.

Yeah, I don't get all the outrage going on over there over tuition going up. My tuition increased every year I was in college. I realize it is a large increase they are proposing but it has been frozen for so long it is probably still way below our tuition increase over the last 10 or 15 years.

Tuition was tripled.

Let them eat cake.
