Pride in DVC/Disney

I was just reading a thread when people were joking about relaxing with their feet in the world showcase fountain. I felt I had to share this story with you and how people are so unconsiderate. I realize it doesn't directly relate to DVC, but it lends to the tenor of how people damage the property.

I was walking around Epcot when I saw a child (3-5yrs old) urinatng right on the wall of one of the exhibits/stores. Not in his pants, but exposed himself and then relieved himself. YES, the parents were there watching him. My wife had to hold me back from saying something to them. I couldn't believe it. How inconsiderate and low class.

This now leads into, my question;

How many of you would be willing to go up and knock on somebody's door or a least leave a note when they leave garbage in the hallway or do something inconsiderate?

I only saw it once, I hung the bag on their doorknob. If I saw someone doing it, I would say something for sure. I wouldn't knock on their door, but I am sure they noticed it when they left.

AEN-I would not have stopped you from saying something. Were they French?(Just kidding).

I have been known to say things to people who I have seen littering. I think I would be more apt to say something at a DVC resort than at a hotel. There definately is a pride of ownership.

I have also been known to pick up garbage-not mine-and throw it out. We were in Times Square the other night, before seeing Beauty and the Beast, and my son decided to clean up Broadway!!

Because the world is a lot different --- one where incidents as you describe happen -- I would not confront someone. It's not my job and it is too risky to confront a stranger when you don't know how they will react. I would put in a complaint to the front desk but I would not personally try to correct the problem. There was a story here once how a minor situation in the laundry room quickly escalated into a real problem. I'm on vacation, I don't need to put myself at risk.

Something like Rich mentions, hanging the garbage on the door or moving it closer to their room, that I might do.

I just leave my trash in front of the room a couple doors down. This way, when Rich walks past, he hangs it on someone else's doorknob.

I saw a family encourage their young son to do this in the MK in line for the race cars. They were on the staircase that leads over to the track. I guess they didn't want to have to lose their place in line. I was sitting on a bench waiting for my family to drive by, I couldn't believe it, disgusting. There are all kinds of people out there!

I would have went up to the parents and asked if they would take there son to the restroom

I confronted a bunch of teenage guys for dropping the f-bomb several times in front of my kids. If it were once or twice I would have given them 'the look', but they were clearly trying to make a scene - laughing and swearing *very* loudly. My first thought was 'omg this is DISNEY! Who do they think they are?!?' I got right up in their face and told them off. My husband was furious - he murmured something about me trying to get him killed and dragged me away... It's always disappointing when 'real life' intrudes on my 'Disney-frame-of-mind'.

Your husband was right and you made a dangerous mistake! Report incidents. Do not attempt to enforce your morals.

My problem is with smokers who toss their "butts" wherever they happen to finish with them (usually it's out of the car window-can't do much about that).

I have been known to tap them on the shoulder and say, "Excuse me, you dropped something back there." If they pick it up, fine. If not, fine. But at least they know that someone saw them (not that they care anyway-if they did, they wouldn't have thrown it down in the first place). IMO, smokers tend to be the worst offenders when it comes to littering.

I've also been known to politely approach teens dropping the f-bomb in the company of small children (only if I felt safe enough to approach them). Usually they apologize and move away (then they probably laugh at me and curse me out). I know there is a risk factor, but just as they have the right to "freedom of speech", I also have a right to not have to be offended by it. I don't understand why they feel the need to use it often and loudly, as if it's impressing someone.

Apparently you don't see the litter people in the parks drop or along the highways. Like beer bottles in the water, napkins on the walkways, bottles on the side of the road, etc. Litter in any form is annoying and unnecessary. Blaming one section of the public is short sighted and not completely fair to those that do not litter with anything.

You're right. Other litterers may be just as bad, and I don't see them dropping things (if I did, I would say something to them, as well). All litterers are rude and inconsiderate. But I will say that Disney castmembers are pretty quick to pick up most litter, so as we don't see a lot of it. Except for the kind you're talking about, where it is perhaps difficult to reach immediately.

Just returned from our first trip "home" last night. (BTW: this is my first post here at the DVC forum) We enjoyed our stay at the BCV, however, while on this topic of respect for property, I'd like to comment on the litter in the hallway at the villas, my girl scout daughter and her brother found themselves picking up a couple of empty containers of juice/soda from around the entry way into the villas (near Ariel's statue) more than twice during our stay. I also noticed that the laundry facility on our floor had 2 laundry carts the first time I used the facility, 2 days later there was only 1 cart, I'm not sure what happened to it? My only guess is that someone wheeled it back to their room to carry back their laundry.

On the foul language topic.....Whoa! While on Kali River Rapids we had the misfortune of sharing our raft with 4 rowdy high school aged kids and a very young couple (19 or 20 year old) Of course they couldn't believe the shock of getting wet on this ride and started shouting out continuously..."Sh%$! Sh&$! After some dirty looks from my DH and me they kind of quieted down apparently realizing that my DD and DS just witnessed this foul behavior/language!

I could understand the surprise and OMG feeling from this ride, but why does the youth of today have no respect for anyone or anything around them? I don't know how many times during our trip we wanted to walk up to these ignorant people and just slap them... I only hope and try to teach my morals to my kids and hope they grow up to be respectful of themselves and others...

I was waiting for my wife and daughter to get off TOT. I was sitting on a short retaining wall at the entrance to Rock n Roller Coaster. A family of three climbed over the wall and up into the landscaping where they spread their stuff on the grass and laid down. here's a picture:

Well, to get back to the main topic, I think most people who choose membership in the DVC are decent people who know the value of money and appreciate the large financial outlay required to be a part of the club. If they do something harmful, it's probably more from ignorance or forgetfulness. My concern is about the people who rent or use points, and have no financial or emotional stake in the resort. They need to be reminded that this is NOT a typical motel room, and the rules for mousekeeping are different. I don't advocate confronting anyone, but finding out a room number and reporting to the staff is certainly a good idea.

If I invite someone to my home, I have the right to require that my guest will not trash my place or violate my rules. Don't we all have the same right at our "home"?

Gary, I'm not sure I understand your comment. Here's a theoretical example. The room next door to me leaves bags of garbage outside their door every day. Soon, there are three bags of garbage. I would not knock on the door and tell them where the garbage bin is and/or chastise them for leaving the garbage out in the hall. It's not my job to be the police and risk getting bopped in the nose for questioning how they are spending their vacation. I could call the desk and say that the room next to me is continually putting garbage in the hall. I would think DVC could then contact the people and explain the procedure. I would prefer the manager get the "bop" since it is his/her job and they are getting paid for running the resort properly.
