Prickly Heat

Hi

Can anyone help with some info on Prickly Heat.

My DH suffers badly from this when we're in Florida and we've tried various lotions and potions over the years but nothing has worked other than for a few hours at a time. Does anyone else suffer from prickly heat and maybe have a remedy for it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Helen, l also suffer the same problem and l don't know if it will work but l will be taking some antihistemines (sp) with me and giving that a go. My doctor was unable to help in any way but as it must be some sort of allergy l thought l would give them a go.

I would be interested to know of any solutions to this as my mother suffers from this. What sun factor protection does your hubby use?

I suffer from this badly and although I still haven’t found anything that prevents it I have found some things which make it better, I use P20 suncream as this is an oil and you only have to apply it once, I shower or bath using oilatum instead of my usual shower gel and never use perfume (not a problem for your DH I know) all of which means my pores are not getting clogged up and my skin isn’t getting more irritated by perfumed toiletries, also I take an antihistamine tablet such as Piriton throughout the summer (this helps ease the horrible itiching). Since using this regime over the last three years or so I have found it has helped greatly and the summer isn’t the nightmare it used to be!

Nic gets it. He uses factor 25 and takes antihistimines from Walgreens. Their own brand. Works a treat.

Thanks for all your replies.

DH has Italian parents- which means that with his skin type prickly heat shouldnt be a problem - but he suffers badly.

He uses either factor 25 or 30 but still gets the rash and more annoyingly the horrible itch - mainly on the backs of his legs- he's had to pull over while driving because he couldn't concentrate with the pain.

He tried antihistamines last year - although not Walgreens - I think we'll give them a try this year.

Haven't tried P20 but sounds promising and I think he'll give that a try in October along with the Walgreens antihistamines.

I suffered with this for years. The first time was in Greece and the doctor gave me an antihistamine injection. This helped and for years after I asked my doctor for one before traveling. I still got the itchy rash, but it confined to my arms. Also about 2 weeks into any holiday it started to dissappear. The Greek doctor did mention one thing, you have to be carefull what sun creams you use, some block the pores and make it worse. I used "grab a Tan" for a few years and I found that to help. It is only available in Florida (I believe). However since having my daughters I don't suffer from it. So may changes in hormone levels have helped.

Is Grab a Tan readily available in Florida from the likes of Walmart & Walgreens?

I found starting a course of Beta Carotene two weeks prior to going away really helps a lot, You do need the high dose one ie. solgar brand from a good Health store .

Vitamin C also will help stop the itching.

I find that all suncreams make it worse as they block the pores (especially waterproof ones) this further enhances the risk of the tiny blisters

Thanks for the info - it's so interesting learning about everyone's different tips - a lot of which I've never heard of - I didn't know about the vitamin C for the itching - this is high on my DH's priority list for some relief - the itching drives him mad.

Forgot to mention that if anyone does not manage to prevent an attack one of the best treatments I have tried and it has never failed to work is Yoghurt.

A greek lady saw my inflamed skin whilst in the supermarket, she could not make her self fully understood so with the help of the shopkeeper she smeared my skin with plain greek yoghurt. I gathered I had to leave it on until the morning ( It does dry) The prickly heat had gone! There were still bumps under the skin but no redness heat or itchiness!

I also suffer from pricly heat and have to be careful which sun lotions I use. I always have to use a sensitive skin lotion, which for the last 4 years has been Avon! The one previous was Boots and I was worse than ever with that. I also take a daily anti-histamine. Tesco do a box of 7 called Loratadine for 99p at the moment which is exactly the same as Clarityn, but Clarityn is a branch name which sells for about a fiver! I do tend to take the Loratadine a couple of days before I go so that it is already in my system and I have been fine the last few foreign holidays we have had.

Rushbury - I bought "grab a tan" from a shop in the Mercardo on I.D. It sold "Key West" type items. This had something in it that allowed the pores to breath. The shop keeper said that it was produced for the Florida climate which can be very humid, hence the skin needed to be able to breath. Ask to try a sample before buying it. I am not sure if you can get it from the bigger shops. Since I don't suffer from it anymore, I have used cheaper brands.

Thanks for that - it sounds very logical and sensible as prickly heat is suppose to be caused by the pores getting clogged up - anything is worth a try for my DH just to get some kind of relief - although even if he didn't manage to beat the prickly heat he'd still keep going to Florida - thank goodness for that!
