Pricing difference referenced in email show

I was at Disney World last week and noticed the pricing difference on the watch that was talked about in the email podcast.

What I noticed was that at the resort shops the offer was $12.95 for the watch after spending $20, but at the parks it was $15.95 after spending $30.

I bought mine at the Trading Post at Fort Wilderness for $12.95. I also saw it at the Contemporary for $12.95. I saw it at Epcot & MK for $15.95!

I will chime in with my experience on the tote bag offer at Christmastime.

On our trip in December 2008 - there was a tote bag available in all the shops. I think it was "spend $40, buy the bag for $10". It was something like that. On the day we checked out (Dec 9) - they had lowered the amount to $30 (in the shop at POP Century). We were making purchases that were over $30, so I got the tote bag. Later that same day - at the airport Disney store - it was spend $40 for the same bag. I don't know if all the locations had dropped the spend amount to $30 that day, but the airport shop didn't.

So - something to keep in mind - for a Christmas item, the price may drop as they get closer to Christmas!

It must have something to do with it being sold in the parks. I guess Disney assumes that more people are more likely to spend a lot of their money in the parks, so why not try and sell something for a little bit more expensive in the parks than at the hotel so they can make a bit more money.

Who knows.

This kind of differentiated incentive is nothing unique to Disney. They have many different venues in which to sell their products, which leads to great research opportunities to test what kind of deals and incentives work better.

I'm sure this is a market study designed to test which of these types of deals does more to incentivize people to purchase more. It is the same idea as a company sending discount coupons in the mail of varying amounts to different people and learning which type of discounts motivate more people to make a purchase.

Saw this on offer in World of Disney in New York last week, can't remember the prices tho, but I was appalled (although I'd already heard about it) by the amount of 'Disney Parks' merchandise there

I noticed this same thing at DLR this June! There was a rolling duffle bag that you could buy if you spent $40, I believe. A few days later, that same offer was being made if you spent $30. I can't remember if the price for the bag was the same or if it went down too. But it was an all over price change, not just park vs hotels. Once I saw the new price it was the same deal at DL, DCA, and DTD, and the hotels. I just assumed it was because no one was buying it at the higher price. Or maybe that deal had been going on for a while and they were trying to clear them out.

I've purchased tote bags a couple of times at WDW when the offer is spend $X amount and get the tote for $X amount. However, I've always just showed my receipts from various purchases totaling the amount required. I've never paid the full amount at one time to get the discounted bag.
