We just got off the Fantasy and booked an Alaska cruise for 2019. However, there were not a lot of choices left. We are considering rebooking for 2020 when the cruises open. Is it true that the prices go up after the opening date? Or is it just that the lower priced rooms get taken and only the more expensive ones are left??

Prices never seem to go lower than opening day, but how quickly they rise depends on demand. You can check out the free price tracker on Touring Plans website to give you an idea on past fare increases over time (by specific cruise, cabin, and number of people).

I don't think this link violates the board guidelines. I just re-read them, so I think I'm ok. Sorry, if not.

Thank you!! That was very helpful. The price of our category has gone up since opening day. But not enough that we would delay the cruise by a year to save.

Prices do go up, sometimes by a lot. I'm eyeing a last minute cruise in December, but cannot commit to it just yet. Between the moment I started looking a few weeks ago and today, it went up about 500 $. There are about 6 or 7 cabins left in the category I'm looking at.

Great! Sure thing. I always like to check the tracker to make myself feel better on how much I "saved" over time. :duck:[Joking]

That website is very helpful. It does vary a bit, but I do feel like many itineraries have their "big first jump" starting around day 300, and then it just goes up from there!

Pricing in each cabin category for each sailing is done in cabin blocks. On opening day for Platinum cruisers, all cabin categories on each sailing will be their lowest price ever. When all of the cabins in the block in that cabin category are booked or held, the pricing for that category goes up to next price level for the next block of cabins. As cabins return to inventory due to hold expiration or cancellations, they do not come back in at their original price point, but get put into the current block pricing scheme. Discounted rates (Florida Resident, Military, Guaranty, etc.). if offered, figure in a bit differently, but do have their own blocks within categories that will sell out.

I know that I booked our rooms for our June 2018 cruise on opening day (for non Castaway status). We had two verandah rooms (the ones that sleep 4 each. I looked not too far from our cruise just to see the price increase and it had increased about $500 per room for a 4 night cruise.

You also have to consider that, most likely, 2020 cruises will be more expensive than 2019 cruises (if you compare opening day to opening day). So a 2020 cruise booked on opening day will be cheaper than a 2020 cruise booked later, BUT it might not be cheaper than a 2019 cruise booked later

DCL Alaskan itineraries are crazy expensive. That is much of what you are seeing. Opening day maynit save much

Alaska is a very popular itinerary with a short season (end of May to beginning of September) so prices start out high and get higher. We booked the August 26 2019 sailing on opening day and I have to say, the price for our cruise has not gone up very much so far. The first couple of cruises and last couple of cruises of the season for Alaska are always the 'cheapest.'
