can i use a former magic band for magical express since mine will be at the desk? I called and a cast member said no since my new one will be the one linked to my reservation, but once at the park, all my bands have been interchangeable?

If your current magic band is still active on MDE then you should have no issue using it for DME, getting into your room, into the parks etc...
I wish CM's knew more accurate info.

Yes you can as any active magicband on your MDE account will be valid for use. Think of the MB as a key to the information on your account. Unless you physically went it and deactivated on MDE it is still active and can be used to open the information that is stored in your MDE account.

Seems like yet another misinformed phone CM. The only issues that I've ever had with an old MB accessing anything is physically opening the resort door. Everything else has worked flawless every time.

If your old mb is still active and linked to your account, then sure. I use one to board the ME all the time.

We used our 2014 MBs in 2015 (we never got a booklet!) with no issues.

Absolutely. Just check that it's linked in MDE. We did that last year. We had the ticket booklet but I wanted to see if it still worked. Never used the ticket, just the band. No problem at all.

We have a number of MBs from old trips and bring them all to use and match with our clothes each day. I have only had a challenge once when I had too many MBs attached to my account. I went in and deactivated the old cards they used to issue and that cleared up the problem. You should have no trouble at all using your old MB(s) on your trip as long as they are active!

I have read that the RFID technology in the magic bands have about a two year life span. I opted to get new magic bands as my previous ones would be two years old at the time of my next trip. I thought it would be better to be safe rather than sorry. Plus, they now offer purple as a magic band colour option where they didn't two years ago!

The long range RFID has about a 2 year life span (it depends on when yours was actually made before shipping etc) but that doesn't affect your use of Magical Express, FP+, Ticket media, room key, and most photopass stuff. The only thing long range RFID affects is the small amount of tracking Disney does, the few interactive signs and stuff that is scattered through out, and any auto-uploading for ride photos and videos.
