We did the eastern in December of 2001. It's technically after hurricane season, but there was still a storm in the Atlantic when we left. It really didn't have any impact on our trip.
The weather was great. The water in the ports was warm, especially in St. Maarten, where we were in the ocean for several hours in the morning. The air temps were in the mid 80s at both St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Probably a little lower at Castaway Cay, but still warm enough to go in the ocean. We had very little rain. Just a quick shower on one of the days at sea, and then a huge rainstorm on Castaway Cay that lasted for only about 15 minutes but dropped a LOT of water on us. Fortunately, we took refuge at the bar, where they had Konk Koolers to help us take our minds off the rain....
The only thing I didn't like about it was getting back and being a week behind in preparing for Christmas, but I'm willing to make that trade anytime!
We cruised Christmas Eastern 2001. I recall having wonderful weather, especially in St. Maarten and St. Thomas. I do not recall having any rain during the trip. I got quite a nasty sunburn during that cruise!!!
I wish I could talk my DH into cruising for Christmas again, but he likes to be home for this holiday. I'd go again in a heartbeat.
