I have 7 year old triplet girls and I was wondering if anyone thought they would enjoy collecting pressed pennies?

Also, how does it work? Are there so many machines in the parks and does each one offer different designs?

There are machines in each park, resorts, DTD, water parks, pretty much everywhere. There are pressed pennies machines that take 2 quarter & 1 penny and there are pressed quarters that take 5 quarters.

Most machines will have 3 designs you can choose from. Disney also sells a book to keep the pennies in ($6 or $7)

Your kids will love them - they're fun to do and somewhat cheap! You can get a list of machine locations at the Guest Relations at the parks.

Tip that a lot of people here do: Get a empty tube of mini M&Ms. The quarters and pennies fit perfectly in them. Or use an empty film canister.

I have three children ages 13, 8 & 5. They all love to collect the pressed pennies. Before you leave make a quick trip to the bank and bring a roll of pennies & quarters with you. They will have lots of fun finding the machines throughout the parks. Happy hunting.

My daughter started collecting the pennies at age 5. She is now 7 and we now make sure that we hit the machines at each resort, park, etc. She wants to have them all and we are now over half way there.

Our goal is to hit every one. And we thought we had it almost done until a new list appeared, and it seems like we have 30 or so more to go. They change the designs every so often to keep upwith the latest movies etc.

Be prepared if you get hooked. Just the pennies alone there are over 200 designs.

Its fum to try and get into places just to press pennies.

We tried to get into SSR (before it was SSR) because only the spa was open at the time and the guard wouldn't let us in.

Our goal next trip is to try andget into Shades of Green to press those pennies. I am not sure if theguard will give us a hard time or not. ;)

My daughter started collecting on our trip when she was turning 6. She is 7 1/2 now and can't wait to start again. My 4 year old is anxious to start also. I found the collector book they sell doesn't hold enough.....at least not for our addictive personalities ;)

DD7 and I have been collecting these for several years now. We both really enjoy it. There are so many machines at WDW, including the resorts, that it'd be hard to get them all in one trip - assuming you want to do silly things like ride rides and eat. ;)

I do skip the expense of the books. We keep our smashies in a bowl at home - DD would rather be able to play with them, organize them by character or place or some such, and show them to friends than keep them in a book, so the cost isn't worth it for us. We would have to spend a couple of hundred dollars (at least!) just on the books to hold all of our smashies - we'd both rather have more smashies or other souvenirs.... or just $200 to start saving for the next trip. ::MinnieMo

You can buy protective sleeves for them. You can get about 100 of them for less then $5.

I can't pass one by. They are the cutest, most packable souvineers! I can't believe there are so many, It is fun!

Another DH who enjoys collecting the pressed pennies!

So I guess it isn't just for kids!!

Pressed Penny Locations

I think we'll start some this trip! Thanks for the site. I have a question, though. What does the (V) and (H) mean>? I'm sure it's obvious...I just can't figure it out!

Thanks

Is it Vertical/Horizontal??

Of cource I had to look and kill my brain thinking of that one...... :rotfl2:

BTW>>>> we LOVED collecting pennies! What a fun thing to do at Disney.

YES!! My kids LOVE collecting penny's. We have tons from Disney (they even have quarter machines if you look hard enough). It's a great way to get inexpensive souveniers, it's exciting for the kids, etc... there are so many of them everywhere. I highly recommend it. We love doing it.

Where can you get these from? My dd loves collecting the pressed pennies and her book was full after our second day!! :flower:

Yes, V and H are vertical and horizontal - how you hold the penny to see the design correctly.

If you do a google search for elongated coin supplies, you should find several sources for the protective items. There are also several excellent sellers who sell at good prices on Ebay.

I admit that I don't purchase these, though. DD7 loves that we keep them in a bowl so she can go through them when she wants to. I may get the protective sleeves and sheets if we get too many more, but for us, it's be just a little less fun that way - hands-on is fun with these little guys! :flower:

Here are some helpful hints from on avid collector to well Others...

1) Always try to use pre 1982 pennies because of the zinc content

2) Use a mini M&M tube to keep them nice and clean and neat.

3) Make your pennies look brand new by simple cleaning.

4) Try to collect the set if there is one( at WDW there are several)

5) Use pennies from a specfic date like your wedding if your on your Honeymoon-- Such as if you were married in Aug of 97 then Use pennies from 97 on youe anniversy or such.

6)Place the pennies heads side facing up or you so youll still be able to see the year after its smashed

To clean Your Pennies:
Place pennies in a vinigar, salt, and baking soda mix over night
Next day rinse with warm water
Make a baking soda and water paste and place a few at a time in the mix
Get an old ruff cloth
Place one penny at a time in cloth with mix still on it
Slightly rub penny.
Rinse.
Place in tube.
