pressed penny machines

I know it's 51 cents for each one.. but my husband is a pressed penny freak... (we get them everywhere we go, not just disney)... and so since there's about 3 or 4 designs for each attraction. / character.. it adds up fast! we have a few of those pressed penny books filled.. (convienently they sell them in the gift shops too)... I'm sure we have many duplicates as well.. since sometimes we're like do we have that one already? and, we'll get it anyway...

Me too, me too! :yay: I've been collecting pennies since I was a kid from all over. My friends even bring them home from their vacations for me now. It's a great 51-cent souvenir. I used to just have them in a coffee cup, but about 5 years ago I discovered the display books while at Disneyland and they are awesome. WDW sells pressed penny books for about $7. They hold 36 pressed pennies and 6 pressed quarters. You might want to have a goal of 108 pennies to fill up 3 books evenly. :rolleyes1

I like this website for other penny machine locations outside WDW and DL.

You'll naturally want to use the brightest cleanest penny... And those are usually the newest. But to get the best pressing quality, you really want to use a penny from 1982 or earlier.

The older penny is copper, whereas the newer penny is a copper cover over zinc. Now the older penny will be grungy looking, so you'll need to clean it up.

To clean, you can soak the penny in either lemon juice or vinegar. You can also add a little salt as an ebrasive if you want to do some scrubbing.

Now you have a clean 25 year old penny, ready for pressing.

When you press the penny, you'll want to press the detail on to the "head" not the "tail" as the Lincoln monument on the "tail" has more ridges and detail, and may interfere slightly with your finished product.

THIS is exactly the sort of information that makes my disboards addiction second only to me Disney addiction!! Thanks Prince John for such wonderful information...

Can someone please tell me how many spots are in a pressed penny book? And do you remember how much they are? Thanks. :goodvibes

We've been doing this for years and have almost 5 books filled! The funny thing is how much fun it is walking through all the stores looking for the machines. The resorts have them as well as other places. This year when we go down in Sept. we already have 4 tubes filled with wquarters and pennies to do them! and yes, we take themout of our carryon bags at the airport to show the security becuase one time I didn't and they went through the whole bag!:surfweb:

The books vary in size, They usually hold anywhere between 20 and 40.
My girl has one that holds 33. I've seen books online in the ballpark of $10-$12. Not sure about the cost of the books in the park. Probably very similar.
