Does anyone collect pressed pennies? I'm thinking of switching from pins due to the out of control prices. Comments?

Thanks,
Dennis-

I do- but have never thought of trading- Since it is only 50 Cents to a dollar to get the pressed pennies/ quarters- But I collect them from everywhere we go that offers them! I plan to hit every pressed penny machine on our first trip to WDW in April- I have pennies from Carowinds, Kings Dominion, Aquarium in Virginia Beach, the Battleships in Virginia beach (I'd have to get my pennies to give you the names...) Many local parks to areas we've visited, and many many more-
I would love to start pin trading/ collecting too though- I along with my kids think this could be very fun- we would collect solely for personal amusement of the ones we love characters of, rides, etc- But I am a Disney Fanatic so all would be valuable to me- I would try and have 2- so I could trade one and keep still my own of the same-

I collect/trade pins and collect squished pennies.

The pennies are nice because lots of places (besides Disney) have squished penny machines so it is a great souviner from all over. I always keep some extra quarters and shinny pennies in my purse because I just never know when I will come across a penny machine. I have several Disney penny books and several non-Disney penny books. There is even a website for pressed penny collectors that lists different locations of machines across the us. Sorry I can't think of the name right now but I am sure it is something like pressedpennies.com.

Yes the price of pins have gone up but I keep the cost down by buying trader pins on clearance from the Disney Store or off of ebay. I have managed to get a lot of nice pins by trading for pins that I have paid less then $3.00 a piece for. I do occasionally pay full price for limited edition pins but for the most part I trade for my keepers.

I collect the pennies as well as the pins. Both are fun to collect! I already have one of the penny books filled and am working on a second one. The pennies and pins bring back some good memories. :goodvibes

My sister and I both collect pressed pennies from all over. They make neat souveniers and aren't too expensive. Some of my favorite ones I glued magents to the back of and display them on my refrigerator.

Before our children start kindergarten, we take a family trip to DW. We collect all the pressed pennies we can find and they go to the child who is about to go to school. They enjoy it and it gives the them something else to look forward to on their trip. We've already had to go with 3 more trips coming up.

I collect pressed pennies from everywhere myself, and just about got everyone of them from WDW. My suggestion is get a list of the locations for the penny machines when you go, search google for Disney world pressed pennies or elongated pennies list. I have one but it is several years old now, and the locations change depending on renovations at the parks. Be prepared there are several hundred machines at WDW, take lots of quarters and pennies. I am sure that you know that pennies made prior to 1982 are the best for pressing, because they are solid copper. New pennies are copper plated nickle, thats why you see silver streaks when you press newer pennies. Good Luck and happy pressing, and it nice to hears that other members enjoy collecting pennies also.

If you really want to get into penny collecting, you should keep a list. Some places have the same penny and you end up with duplicates. I also think they move the machines around. Of course they get new designs too. The list keeps you current---most of the time. It was wrong for DHS last trip. Go to http://www.presscoins.com/Listings/WDWMaster.pdf for a good and updated listing. This site gives it in different formats:http://www.presscoins.com/listings/#newlistings.
I think it's a fun thing to search out the machines and see how different they are.

I have started collecting them two trips ago. i usually try to limit myself to one book of pennies( most books I have seen hold 64) per trip. As the Previous poster noted you want to try and use pennies 1982 and before because they are solid copper. if you have a coin store near your house you can usually buy a roll of pre1982 (they usually sort them by year) pennies for 2-3 dollars and soak them in vinegar and salt to shine them.

I collect the pressed pennies too, but I am disappointed that Disney doesn't change the penny machines more often. It seems like they do get a couple of new machines every year, but most are still the same. The machines in the World Showcase in each country have been the same ones for the past five years.

at the Magic Kingdom. You can probably get it from Guest services at the other parks as well. The list shows which coins and where they are located in the parks.
Thanks in advance and I hope this helps. I have been collecting them on my trips since 2000, and agree with the previous poster about the infrequent design changes. I also have noticed a decline in the quality of the minting- since I frequent Disneyland, and regularly get mine there. The pictures are not nearly as clear as in the past- some faces on the coins are almost unrecognizable now in the newer designs in both WDW and DL.

My DGF really wants to collect pressed pennies when me make our next trip. Do you know if you can buy anything to hold them? Display books or something?

Disney sells penny books.

We have done both pin trading and pressed pennies. Pressed pennies are acquired from any place we travel, the pin of course are from WDW - but we did buy a pin from Kennedy Space Center and added to the lanyard. That is the most we spent for pins.

I bought pins last time from a website (sorry dont remember which one) just a few to get started. I did have a seasoned pin trader make my boys trip by sending me some assorted pins and a couple lanyards to get them started. That was truly awesome and appreciated.

When we saw a seasoned pin trader at the park, the kids would ask them if they wanted to trade they usually will and when my boys would ask which was their favorite pin...the conversation usually ended up with the seasoned pin trader telling the boys about a certain pin the boys had on their lanyard and if it was more valuable...and what pins to look for. Of course we were right there with the kids.

This is how we acquired some of our more valuable pins - not by buying them.

Have fun with the pressed pennies and pins!

Darcy
