Pressed pennies-how much change?

That would depend on how many you want to do...but for the penny machines you need at least $.51 for each pressed penny.

How many pennies do you want your child to get? There a bunch of penny machines - so 51 cents per machine, a few dime, and a few quarter machines, so you can budget for those. Do you want all of them? Do you want to get a penny book and make this an ongoing adventure for various trips?

Here are a couple of sites regarding the available pennies and where they are located

DLR released a whole bunch of new machines in honor of the 60th anniversary. They also published a guide with the pressed coin locations. You can usually get a copy in the parks or download it from this Parks Blog posting:

The pressed penny machines cost $0.50. There are also pressed quarter and nickel machines. The pressed quarters cost $1.00 plus the quarter (usually) and the nickel costs $0.75 plus the nickel. I would bring a couple of rolls of quarters and lots of shiny coins to press!

How much change do you bring? Per kid :)
My grandkids enjoy collecting the pressed pennies. For awhile I'd carry a baggie of quarters and pennies. It was heavy!

A few years ago I wised up.... Not wanting to carry the bag of quarters and pennies on a January trip, here's what I did....

I went to the neighborhood pharmacy and asked for 4 of the tall Rx bottles just a little bigger around than a quarter.
I filled each one with 2-quarters & 1-penny until they were full. Gave one to each grandkid for Christmas.

When it came time for the trip, I reminded them to bring their quarters & pennies.

I also made Disney cinch bags for each grandkid to carry in the parks.
It makes my day in the parks a little easier, not having to carry everyone's stuff.

I have a question, not sure if this is ok to do or not, but is it too much trouble to ask a CM at a register for change? I know I have asked them for shiny pennies. I like my pressed pennies to be shiny!

Yes, definitely. We have done this and the CMs are very nice about it. Some stores also have change machines near the pressed penny machines.

Historically, whether Disney or not, we would use the tubes from M&M minis, which fit quarters perfectly...and they were fun to empty beforehand. More recently, DS, who is now 19 and still collects pressed pennies, uses a tube from Airborne.

If they are like our kids and want to try and hit each machine possible then lots. :-)

Shiny pennies are not what you want. Well, you do want shiny but nothing that comes from a change drawer. You really want pre 1982 pennies that are mostly copper. Anything recent is not and will streak when pressed. To clean pre-1982 pennies we use bar keepers friend. Shines them up and if part of our pre trip ritual.

thanks for the tip. Now i have to go searching for older pennies :)

For containers we used the mini M&M tubes you can get at most store check-out lines. I'm pretty sure the kids could carry a roll of quarters and a most of a roll of pennies in a tube. Each kid had their own and carried them in the parks, so they were ready when they found a penny squisher.

Thanks for posting this! My kids are huge pressed penny collectors and they are going to be thrilled to know there will be special pennies on our next trip!

You could even "stack" them 2 Quarters & 1 Penny in the tube for ease.
