Press 1 for English!

Granted I don't know the OP, but I'd be willing to bet that OP speaks English because she was lucky enough to be born to parents who either lived in the United States or ensured that she learned to speak English, not because of anything she herself has done.

Once in a blue moon, I get an earful from some random crazy, who wants me to know that they're upset because our automated phone system asks them to press 1 for English. Seriously? All the problems in this world and that's what you choose to spend your time getting upset about? And you want to complain at me about it?

GET. OVER. IT.

And they would probably REALLY complain if they had to press 2 for English. WHAT DO YOU MEAN ENGLISH ISN'T #1!!!"

I am so glad everyone is so perfect and nothing has ever aggitated them. LIKE MY THREAD ;)

in your own words. GET OVER IT!!!! it is just something i wrote. Im sure you have much better things to do with your time.

To the ones that understand where I was coming from Thank you. :)

I would love a nice glass of cabernet to go with mine please.

I will agree that the whole "press a number" thing is totally aggravating to me, regardless of what the question is. Just let me speak to a human, please.

What I hate even more are the ones where the computerized system wants me to say my answers rather than pressing a number. I feel ridiculous talking to a machine like that.

To you it may just be a small vent, but the fact that you vented about it reveals tons about your general attitude toward those different from you.

I do not think you really understand the quote in your signature. People who do not speak English in America are facing a major battle, one much bigger than having to wait one extra second and press a button before going on to press a longer series of buttons in order to resolve their question.

Come here, dear...me thinks you need a  after some of these replies. Gosh, people, the rest of you don't have any pet peeves? No irritations that bug the crap out of you? Oh, you do? Well, don't bother mentioning them here, most people won't be very sympathetic. ;)

OP, I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I called my local pharmacy's automated number this morning to order some prescription refills and even though I've never thought much about it before, they did say "for English, press #1." Why is that? Shouldn't they say, in Spanish, "for Spanish, press#1", then if nothing is pressed continue on in English. Which is the official language of our country, is it not? ;)

how many people do you think would stay on the line if an automated voice started speaking spanish as soon as it picked up? lets be honest here, with the overwhelming amount of "THIS IS AMERICA SPEAK ENGLISH" club members, how much business would that place lose if their phone started speaking in spanish?

Me too, lol, and then explain to them that we are a business, and therefore we want to be able to speak with all of our BILL paying customers in whichever language they prefer. And just because you speak ENglish, does not mean the majority of our customers do. Then the same morons complain about how long it took to get something accomplished on the phone call, and I promise, their useless complaining prob took about 90% more time then the actual question/answer.

No it is not. The United States does not have an official language.

Sure. High on the list is people who are so intolerant and entitled that they are bothered by having to spend literally a second to push a button to specify in which language they would like to conduct their business.
