White House: No announcement on war expected
NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES
WASHINGTON, March 6 President Bush will hold a news conference Thursday night to discuss the war on terrorism and his determination to disarm Iraq, the White House announced Thursday morning.
THE 8 P.M. ET news conference will be televised live nationally. The president will begin with an opening statement about successes in the war against terrorism and the importance of disarming Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters.
U.S. and Pakistani authorities are questioning Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, allegedly the operations chief for bin Ladens al-Qaida network, who was captured in Pakistan last weekend. His arrest is considered a major victory for Bush, who has been accused of ignoring the war on terror in the showdown with Iraq.
NOT SCHEDULED ANNOUNCEMENT
Even though the United States is seemingly on the brink of invading Iraq, Fleischer said Bush would not be making any critical announcements on the Iraq crisis.
This is a news conference. This is not a scheduled announcement of anything, Fleischer said.
Bushs plans for a new U.N. resolution setting the stage for a war against Iraq ran into trouble on Wednesday when France, Russia and Germany vowed to block the resolution
NO DECISIONS ON WAR
Fleischer told reporters that Bush had not made up his mind to use military force to rid Baghdad of its alleged weapons of mass destruction and depose Saddam.
In the event that the president decides to use force, the president always thinks its important to communicate, but the president has not made any decisions about that matter, he said.
Bush has held eight news conferences since taking office two years ago.
He is known to think that White House news conferences are too formal, and that they include too much preening by reporters.
