WDW is complicated!

We are Disneyland vets, we usually go twice or so a year. This year I was lucky enough to make it down four times. Two trips with the family and some solo days associated with work/side trips. We know the place fairly well.

WDW, not so much. Never been, have been reading a lot the last 6 months, but wow, so much to digest.

So many things to contemplate, this is the first time I have done a pre-trip report, mainly to ask the DIS community to be my sounding board. Steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Cast of characters: Me (44), DW (45), DD (18), DS (13), DM (64).

When: December 2015. Exact dates still up in the air, but currently targeting December 12-21. What are the typical days for the Xmas parties?

Where: Looking at a serious split stay. Current plans are to start at AKL for 3-4 days, head to Universal for a day and a half (staying at one of their hotels for a day), then 3-4 days at the Grand Floridian (maybe Poly-we are lucky enough to go to Hawaii frequently-so not so sure of changing to here-I assume most if not all of the construction will be done by the end of next year).

We will need two rooms the whole time, so the discounts of renting points sounds real good right now. The math still points to renting points versus booking directly with Disney or a discount room broker. It really looks like literally half the price. Kind of scary renting points though, you are locked in! More research needed, but it looks ok when going with one of the renting companies. Any real difference between the main two?

I guess I need to check out one of the touring websites to really lock down days for which parks, which may sway where we stay and when. AKL is out there, but it looks so nice. Which view? Are these sites accurate a year out on predicting which parks to visit for the day? Do they show stuff that far in advance?

I plan on renting a car. We will probably use Disney transportation from time to time, but I like the idea of being able to get up and go when I want to with a vehicle. I understand parking may cause some additional walking. Are there drop off zones? My DM has some mobility issues from time to time, so if I can spare her from walking the parking lots all the better.

Ok, that is enough for now. More info to come when I have time. I plan to do a whole lot of research during the xmas break-more questions to come!

General Itinerary, subject to change of course. Need to check out advised parks on the days we are there-still not sure how accurate those websites are that far out.

Day 1
-Early flight in-likely to hit Orlando around 6 am from west coast
-Check in/drop off luggage at AKL
-Try to hit AK for rope drop-hit EE, do safari around 10 (or should this be first?)
-Back to AKL for lunch/hopefully room ready-rest
-Probably back to AK for a few hours
-Boma for dinner
-Probably crash early

Day 2

-Epcot for RD
-Likely back to room for lunch/rest (plan on renting car-so going back and forth may not be too painful?)
-DHS for afternoon FP+ rides (we know that hopping is not the same at WDW compared to DL-so we will experiment to see how it works for us)
-Dinner-leaning towards Sci-Fi Diner

Day 3

-MK for rope drop (I know this is far away from AKL-but I can get our troops up early)
-Try for Be Our Guest for lunch
-Likely stay at MK all day-some may go back to room for rest
-FP+ rides for afternoon
-Stay at MK for light dinner/back to AKL for light dinner at Sanaa/Jiko-undecided

Day 4

-Rest day-sleep in, the troops rally!
-Check out of AKL
-Sanaa or Jiko for lunch, maybe something in DTD
-Check into Universal hotel in evening

Day 5

-Universal/Islands of Adventure all day

Day 6

-Check out of hotel
-Universal/Islands of Adventure
-Head back to WDW in afternoon/early evening
-Check into GF
-Narcoses' for dinner or maybe Ohana and catch fireworks on beach

Day 7

-DHS for RD (still thinking about this-might just be hitting this park for shows-so this strategy might change)
-Back to room for rest/lunch
-Epcot for afternoon FP+
-Biergarten for dinner

Day 8

-MK for RD
-Back to room for rest/lunch
-Maybe AK for shows we missed or back to Epcot for afternoon FP+
-Need to fit in Illuminations somewhere
-Coral reef or Rose & Crown for dinner?

Day 9

-Epcot for RD
-Monsieur Paul for lunch
-Room?
-Illuminations/or MK for afternoon FP+
-Maybe desire package for fireworks at MK?

Day 10

-Wildcard RD/maybe sleep in
-Which shows did we miss-hit that park
-DHS for dinner-Brown Derby?

Day 11

-Check out, head to airport

Lots to still think about. Mixed reviews on park hopping, which we know is so different at WDW compared to DL.

And where to fit in Xmas party? What days are those typically on?

Need to figure out drop dead dates on reservations for everything-so much planning!

Do we need to book at 11 months out for all DVC? Or is that for the high demand locations only?

They do recommend booking 11 months out with the highly popular resorts. We have also looked into renting points for the first time, but I like you said its so final, etched in stone :scared:
Even though our plans are pretty solid, renting points is a new world for us.
We have stayed at AKL and we did find having a car helped us out a lot.
