I need prescription reading glasses. I have the prescription from the eye doctor. They want almost $400 but on line it is less than $100.

Does anyone know if the online ones are good? Any recommendations of good sites?

Don't do it.

I once ordered a pair of RX sunglasses online. Yeah, they got my prescription exactly right -- the lenses were perfect. Loved them. And I liked the way the frames looked, but the "arms" were too short for my head. I couldn't stand to wear them for more than five or ten minutes. I took them to the place at the mall and they tried to adjust them, but it was impossible -- the "arms" didn't have enough material to adjust. You need the frames to be fitted to your head.

Also, since you've had a quote of $400, I'm guessing that you're getting progressives or some other not-so-standard lens. Progressives require that you have your focal point measured, and this can't be written on that little blue prescription paper. These lenses are more complicated, and you're less likely to get a good result from someone who hasn't seen you.

Unless you're willing to gamble $100 hoping that the frames'll fit, suck it up and pay for someone local to make your glasses. You're going to wear these every single day. They're not a skimp item.

Do you have AAA?
How about professional memberships? Oddly enough, a teachers' group of which I am a member offers discounts on glasses.
Does your health insurance cover any eye benefits?
Google to see if you can find a coupon online.

I respectfully disagree with Mrs. Pete. I've ordered my last three pair of glasses online, much less expensive than I was paying at Walmart. I got a pair of prescription sunglasses first, they were under $50 for progressive lens so I figured it was worth a shot. They worked great. I've since ordered two pair of regular glasses. The glasses need adjusted when they arrive but I've been lucky to take them to a local department store and have them adjusted free. It was fairly easy to order, in fact I called my eye doctor and his office was able to help me with all the information I needed to order.

I like the glasses I've ordered online. They fit well. The last few frames I've gotten in the store have tarnished or had spots were the finish came off after just a few months. In fact my last pair from Walmart were replaced within 8 months because the finish came off and they no longer made those frames. Online is definitely worth a try.

This can be one area where you can really be penny smart and pound foolish.

If you get your glasses from you eye doctor, this is what you will get:
  • You will be able to try the frames on to make sure that they suit your face and coloring.
  • The doctor will make sure that the right size frame and stems are ordered for you.
  • When the glasses arrive from the lab he uses, he will test the lenses on a machine to make sure that the right prescription was put into the glasses.
  • When you arrive to pick them up, he will clean them and put them on you. He will check to make sure they sit straight on your face.
  • He will check to make sure that they are comfortable.
  • He will make adjustments to the nose pads (if the glasses have them) and the stems to make them fit as good as possible.
  • He will check your visual comfort with the lenses.
  • He will accept a return to have to prescription adjusted if you bring them back within a trial period because the prescription isn't quite right.
  • He will polish out surface scratches during a reasonable time while you have the glasses.
  • He will make minor repairs (lost screws, popped lenses, broken nose pads) for free and charge a minimum for replacements (broken lenses frames or stems).
If you buy them online, you will get:
A pair of glasses in a box.

I take our scripts to americas best and get 2 pairs of eyeglasses for $79(or $89 depending on what frames we want) I do this for all four of us and Im putting the insurance($10 last year) for my DD this year. It does take about a week to come in but I like the fact its cheap and I can see how the frames look on me.
btw I drive for a living and they have alot of glasses that have either the sunglasses that hook to them or you can make your second pair into sunglasses. I have a pair of driving glasses that fit over my reg ones and they fit great and i dont look "old" as my kids say(i got these ones at cvs)

Thanks so right.

My husband just ordered some from Warby Parker, which is on-line only. You can get 5 pairs sent to you for free to try on. They ask you to send them back within 5 days, they pay postage. Once you are ready to order, send in your prescription and in about a week you'll get new glasses for $95. They were great, super fast and have customer service, which most on-line glass ordering doesn't.

As for measuring, they ask you for your measurements, which my husband got at his exam so it was easy!

ITA. I work at an eyeglass store and no way would I buy a pair of glasses online. They can't take measurements on you so if you buy them online and they work great, you just got lucky and everything lined up. If you have a strong rx, a lot of astigmatism, progressives, prism...you really need to be fit by a good optician. You don't have to drop $400 on designer frames and such.

You COULD buy your frames online and then just pay for the lenses at the optical. But again, if the frames don't fit you well, you'll have to return them. You could buy them and then ask the optician if they fit correctly before having lenses cut. But honestly, I'm not sure if it's worth the aggrivation.

I just get mine from the eye doctor. The person who fits mine has to do a lot of tweaking on mine every time. I also like that I can stop in and they will adjust them for me if I fall asleep wearing them and bend them or if they are uncomfortable.

They replaced my husband's nosepads when one of his fell off, put his lens back in when he hit himself in the face doing something at work and knocked a lens out, etc.

Then again it costs us much less for our glasses anyway. We get them at the same time and after our vison insurance everything we have done is generally around 250 for us both. Oh and that is with transition lenses and my husband wearing bifocals. Add in the 12 a month (estimating high its 5 something a pay period) I pay for the insurance and we still come out less then 400 for two people.

Is the $400 for the glasses at the optomistrist? You can take the script and go to Lenscrafters, Eyemart, Walmart, etc. Then you can still try on the glasses, check for fit, how they look, etc. There is a wide variety of prices on frames- whether you want something basic or a designer name.

DH and DD both recently got glasses for the first time. DH got his at Eyemart and DD at Walmart. Both checked that the frame was a good fit to start with and made adjustments when they got them back.

Wow! I wish I had any of your eye coverage. My glasses are almost $400 out of pocket, the insurance covers about $100 for frames/lens but only every other year - and that is at Walmart. No, I do not get designer glasses either. But with the issues I've had with finish coming off the glasses frame I do get titanium frames which severely limits my frame selection. I can only imagine how much they would cost at the eye doctors office. I do get progressive and usually transition lens. Maybe I've been lucky but for me glasses online cost 20% of what I paid at Walmart and fit just as well. If money was no object I would definitely shop at my eye doctor's office, unfortunately that is not the case. OP - good luck with your decision.

Try zenni optical online. You can get 3-4 pairs for around $50.
Since I can't try them on, I end up with one pair I love, two pairs that are ok, and one pair of birth control glasses. Still that one pair that I love would have cost me $100+ even with insurance, so I'm ahead. I then re-order that pair in other colors because it's fun to have options.

I have never had a problem with the prescription there. I can always see well with them, even if I choose unflattering frames. ;)

I have a pair of $400 eyeglasses ($300 of that was on the lenses; no vision insurance, bought from Lenscrafters) that have a crack in them that I use as my back-up pair. I have purchased two pairs of eyeglasses from 39dollarglasses.com. The first pair I had for two years and lost them 2 weeks ago in FL. I just received my newest pair. The first pair I bought from 39dollarglasses.com were around $80 because I paid for a lot of the "extra" stuff (anti-glare, etc.), but the newest pair I got for $23 with shipping because I found a promo code for $15 off on retailmenot.com and I didn't get any of the extras.

The glasses from 39dollarglasses.com are sturdy and serve their purpose. My $400 eyeglasses are definitely better quality, crystal-clear lenses, but I can see just fine with my 39dollarglasses.com ones. I received them in about a week and a half after ordering.
