PrePurchase Questions ...

Im looking at a resale that has points that become available AUG 1st each year BUT we travel LATE AUG and even with DVC we most likely would like to keep that time of travel
August is the perfect UY for your travel pattern...assuming it doesn't change.

NO. That is incorrect.

When you bank points, you shift them from one Use Year to the next...period. So in your example, your UY 2000 points would be banked into your 2001 UY -- which starts on Aug 1 2001 and extends until July 31, 2002. NOT 2003.

What the timeshare salesman was talking about was a combination of banking AND borrowing. That would go like this, and would give you three years of points to use in Year 2:

Year 1 points -- banked into Year 2
Year 2 points
Year 3 points -- borrowed into Year 2

Hummm okay so I guess how he explained it then I totally missed what he was saying. Being as the more I start to now FULLY understand this system Im trying to figure out whats the best month to get my points! :crowded:

So again then ...

Aug 1 2000 - I bank these 200 points
(They are now only VALID to JULY 31 2002)

Aug 1 2001 - 200 more points (valid through JULY 31 2002)
Aug 1 2002 - 200 More Points

So by this math in JULY of 2002 i could have 600 Points by using my banked points and then my borrowed points! OR just 400 points to use before July 31st 2002

BUT if I like to travel in late AUG its better that I find a resale with an earlier date that you get the points than AUG 1 ?

NO...if you are pretty sure you will continue to travel in August, an August UY is perfect. Remember that UY has NOTHING to do with when you can book a reservation -- it only governs the expiration date of the points and your banking deadline.

Where it would become a bit of an issue would be if your plans changed to travel earlier in the summer (June or July). But that would only be a problem if you canceled a reservation after your banking deadline (March 31, for an Aug UY). If that happened, you would have to use or lose those points by July 31.

RIGHT I understand now .. I was still assuming the 2 YEAR BANKING where AUG then would be an issue ... :scared: thanks for helping me clarify that! :)

Does anyone have a resource or post where I can read more about how the whole BANK/BORROW work in more detail as you have mentioned its a 1 TIME TRANSACTION deal so I want to be sure I fully understand that process as its something we WOULD be doing on a regular basis in terms of BANKING our points to another year.

there's not much to it.

if you bank pts ahead one UY, they are valid for stays in that next UY. they cannot be moved again with banking and borrowing, so if you don't use them in that new UY, they will expire and disappear into the void and you get no value from them.

borrowing is a little different in that you would not borrow pts just to have them available in the earlier UY...you would only borrow pts as needed to complete a reservation. but if you have to cancel that reservation, the borrowed pts cannot be moved again with banking and borrowing, so if you don't use them for a stay in that new UY, they will expire and disappear into the void and you get no value from them.

you can use banked/borrowed pts to make reservations that you use yourself, give away to friends or family, or rent for money to strangers (by yourself or with the help of a broker like david).

traveling early in your UY (in late aug for an aug UY) gives you more time and options if you need to cancel a reservation before you risk losing any pts. (as noted above, UY has nothing at all to do with booking a reservation).

I guess my main question is more with banking ...

lets assume this year AUG 1st I got 200 points ...

I know Im not planning on going to Disney until AUG of next year but I know I wont NEED the whole 200 points from this year so I only need say 160 of them!

so I have 40 points left over I know i can rent them but maybe I decide i want to use them ... so if I just bank the whole 200 points when do they become available again so i can rent them out or decide that i want to use them all for my trip next aug?

again probably a dumb question but I get stupid like this in looking at all theirs weird things before making a big purchase.. lol :crazy2: just want to make sure im not going to be wasting points!

THOUGH now im my public thought process ...:rotfl:

I guess I could just bank the whole 200 then use them all on my trip and only use whats needed from the current UY when I travel and bank the left over from that year as they would be good for our next trip 2 years down the road.

Aug 1 2000 - 200 Points Bank Them

Aug 1 2001 - 200 Points

TRIP AUG 15th 2001 - 350 Points
(200 Bank Pts and 150 UY points)
BANK 50 left over from current UY - 2001

Aug 1 2002 - 200 Points (50 Banked Good Through JULY 3st 2003)

So that wont work as Id travel in AUG of 2003

:furious: why does this seem so hard once you feel ready! :rotfl:

like i said above, banked/borrowed pts are like any other pts in that you can use them to make a reservation that can be rented out.

but you can only move pts ahead one UY, so that can make things tough on every-other-year travel (and worse on every-third-year plans).

one other thing to keep in mind is that you can transfer current UY pts to another DVC owner. banked/borrowed pts can be used to make a reservation that can be rented, but they cannot be transferred to another owner.

(also, DVC prohibits accepting money for points transfers...but some people do that anyway...just be aware that disney won't get involved in a dispute and member services might get angry if you suggest that money is trading hands in a point transfer.)

RIGHT! I don't plan to rent or give away points if I can avoid it.. hell I want to use them ALL!!! but its just the weird thing that I do and try to look at it from all options so now understanding that you can only transfer points for current UY helps me figure things out.

:coffee: back to reading ...

MUCH APPRECIATION for all your help guys/gals! :lovestruc
