I remember something about this on here b4, but I cant find it now. Can someone tell me how to prepay the sunpass thing b4 we even leave TN (if possible), or where to get a temporary sticker thing (I think that is what it is anyway)? Thank you in advance. We just dont want to have to worry about bringing tons of change and all that stopping and going...etc.

If you only need it for one car, you can order the SunPass Mini, which is a sticker that can only be used in one car. It costs $4.99 and when you register this amount can be used for tolls, so it's basically free.

If you would need to move the Sunpass between several cars or for rental cars for example, you would need the transponder which costs $25 and has to be loaded with at least $10.

You "pre-pay" by linking your new SunPass to a major credit or debit card.

A previous poster said you can now purchase them online -- I had to go through a different method...

I hear you!

Sorry, my mistake, the SunPass Mini sticker is only available in CWS and Publix stores and service plazas on the Turnpike.

The transponder can be ordered online.

I think that may have been true at one point, but when I went to the sunpass.com site to purchase it allows me to select the mini. However, I didn't actually purchase as I am trying to confirm if I can tape it to windshield of the rental and it will still work.

According to the website, the sticker only works when permanently attached to the windshield.

You'll have to remove the sticker before you return the rental car. You won't get a refund if you don't use 4.99 of tolls but you might get a refund of any additional pre-paid tolls you put on your account.

Unless you are going often enough to make it worth while to invest in the portable, don't bother with the SunPass mini. It isn't worth the hassle of having to sign up to use it. You don't save much if any money with it around Orlando, and only an extra $0.25 per toll plaza if the toll plaza is SunPass, E-Pass plazas don't provide any discount.

So my suggestion is the portable or just pay cash.

People who buy the mini-Sunpass want to avoid lines at the cash lanes. They also want to avoid problems if they don't have exact change but exit at one of the exists that only have exact change lanes.

The (possible) small toll discount isn't enough to justify the effort.

It does help to avoid the lines, but we have never seen real huge back ups at the tolls. The most I have seen is maybe a 5 car back up and we travel to Orlando several times a year.

Most people are planning a trip, so planning to bring a roll of quarters shouldn't be much trouble. I would go for the roll of quarters along with the "hassle" of the booths over bothering with the mini for a single trip. As I indicated though, if you plan to travel every year or several times a year, picking up the portable is a great idea.
