Has anyone here been successful, or tried, to lose weight by only eating prepackaged meals (either by WW, South Beach, or Lean Cuisine)? I don't want to pay $ to join an organization, but I need help. I like the ease of use of microwave meals.and prepackaged food eliminates the time I don't have for meals planning, also I can avoid cooking then because I'm a nibbler!

Just wondering what anyone else's experience has been with this sort of approach?

I eat Lean Cuisine dinners all the time! I don't know if that was the reason for my loss because i ate normal food also (i generally eat one LC a day either for lunch or dinner)

try the chicken with almonds -- its awesome! also their pizzas are good!

Well, years ago I did Jenny Craig and lost a lot of weight.

I have a family now so it is just easier and cheaper to prepare healthy and measure my food.

My plan now is to:

Journal every bite!
Measure before eating

I know that one of the JC meals can have 300 or so calories and I can still be hungry afterwards. However, if I eat brown rice, some steamed fish and a salad I can have far larger portions and still stay in the 300 calorie range and not be so hungry.

I incorporate a lot of lean cuisine/WW into my life. I am just doing low-calorie so I love having the ease and the calories already calculated for me.

If I have the time, I do prepare food, but for lunch at work it just isn't going to happen. I love to sleep and am ALWAYS running late in the mornings.

What I do, is I bring a lean cuisine or WW meal with me and use it as the "icy" in my lunch box. I also throw in a diet soda, a cucumber (you can substiture carrot, tomato, any easy to munch on veggie), a dannon light 'n fit yogurt (60 cals) or a sugar free pudding (also 60 cals), and sometimes fruit -- apple, strawberries, banana. Only takes a few minutes to throw it all in the lunch box or in the side of my laptop bag.

Sometimes I throw in some lettuce and will make a quick salad while at work... I keep a low-fat dressing in the fridge there w/ my name on it.

I am currently doing the HMR diet. I've done the WW/LC but found myself hungry or not quite satisfied. With the HMR I am full. you do suppliement with shakes and can also do fruits & veggies. I've lost about about 30 pounds. It is pretty easy to follow. The entrees (11 different ones ) run about 2.50 each. I get mine online. It is available in a lot of hospitals also.

I am sure you could eat only these "prepackaged" foos and lose wieght but what have you learned from it?

If after you lose your weight, will you know how to eat to maintain that loss?

I only use the prepackaged as an alternative to eating out at lunch.

I think that incorporating some "fast" food into your lifestyle, or at least for me, helps see alternatives to the burger and fries that I used to eat (and got me to this point!).

I actually incorporate real fast food as well, just in smaller portions and check the nutritional info online before going. If not, I won't stick to this for life, because I can guarantee that I won't ever not have to grab something on the go occasionally.

That all being said, I agree that the nutrisystem/JC approach, where you replace all meals with prepackaged for a set amt of time, is probably not the way to keep weight off.

I lost 100 pounds on HMR back in 2001-2, but I joined the program, and I cannot understate just how valuable it was. While I kept the weight off for a few years, about a year after I left the maintenance program I began inching back up. I've now got about 31 of 40 regained pounds left to lose, trying to lose it myself, without the program. I've lost 9 pounds in a month, which isn't bad, but it is the first month, so at this rate, it might take me as long to lose this 40 pounds as it took me to lose the 100 pounds six years ago.

I think the debate about whether prepackaged meals do the trick is valid, but the problem isn't the meals, it is ourselves. We get this idea in this head that we can "go back to eating normally" afterwards: Eating normally got us fat in the first place!!! Rather, we need to come to the realization that what you see in those prepackaged meals is actually what you should be eating normally. Whether you expend the time to make it yourself (I don't know how busy your life it, but I surely will never have time to do so) or you use prepackaged meals, that's what your portions should look like. Use this weight-loss period to retrain your brain, and remember it, because if you don't, you'll end up having to re-lose 40 pounds six years later.

I agree with bicker: one of the reasons I like the prepackaged foods is because they've retrained my eyes to what a portion size should be. And gone are the 12 in. dinner plates I was eating off of, too.

I also agree with HockeyKat that these prepackaged meals are a good alternative to the McD's burgers & fries I was eating too.

Years ago I lost these same 27 lbs with a behavior modification plan, just cutting my portion sizes and making healthier choices, but I still gained the weight back. For me personally, Il'l have to weigh myself every day and if I see myself creeping back up a little, nip that right in the bud! I think if being a certain weight/size or health is really important to me (and it is!) I'll have to make it a daily priority. I think, for me, the pre packaged foods are a big help towards retraining my eyes, and my stomach!

and oh my gosh! has anyone tried the little WW carrotcakes? I could eat a whole box! (but I won't!)

The only thing I eat off the 12" dinner plates is a HUGE green salad. Everything else gets the salad plate!

Portion control is definitely key.

Ater having a baby I did well taking off my baby weight (at least the weight from that baby....I still have my first baby weight) by using a lot of pre-packaged foods, including lean Cuisine. It fit well into my lifestyle. A BIG obstacle for me in losing weight is the planning and having food on hand. If I don't know what to eat or don't have it readily acessible then I make poor choices. Prepackaged foods helped me make a better choice.

Has anyone ever heard of Schwans? I've overheard some folks talking about it but never really found out what it was.

We have Schwan's delivery up in my area. What I *think* it is is a place to pre order frozen foods and have them delivered to your house. My friends used to buy their vanilla ice cream in bulk...and it was delicious! They have a nice website: www.schwans.com
