Prep school axes lacrosse coaches after players’ booze-filled Disney trip

simple bed checks may have alleviated this!

So the coaches weren't supposed to sleep?

"... got busted for sneaking out of their rooms at night to throw wild, booze-soaked parties during a trip to Disney World ... Ubers to local liquor stores, used fake IDs to stock up on booze, and returned to an artificial beach area at the complex to party, a team source said."

These are high school students, old enough to know better, old enough to be held accountable and old enough to understand THEY should be punished for THEIR actions. While all the coaches lost their coaching/teaching jobs the students ..... "...suspended one student for the rest of the school year and barred five others from attending prom" barely got a slap on the wrist. No prom? Boo Hoo. What a sad commentary on the school. In reading the article the school has a record of poor behavior so maybe the lesson learned is IF you are going on any away trip, the school needs to hire night security guards to sit outside their rooms (and no rooms on the first floor) because they can't be trusted.

I don't know what they mean by complex but what location that rents by the week would not have had the security to see 50 teens partying and address the situation immediately. ".... attracted up to 50 participants, took place for six consecutive nights." If Disney, one more situation they lost control of that involves teens.

PS Have been involved in high school sports/trips for 15 years, many at Disney.

It sounds like they would rather fire the coach then piss off wealthy parents that pay high tuition. It's a shame because these kids will continue to do this sort of thing without consequence.

Of course...this is overprivileged suburban America, right?

Before people get too carried away with their personal bias in reaction to the story above, I'd like to point out a few things since I have long experience supervising teens as a Scoutmaster as well as my involvement with a high program where about 800 kids from all over the state spend 4 nights in the same hotel near a Big Ten campus. First, the article doesn't say of any of the players weren't personally punished. They might have been and privacy rules might prohibit the school from speaking on the matter. Secondly, the coaches should exercise a reasonable standard of oversight of the team. If what is reported is true and the coaches "called it a night" early and never checked on the players beyond that, then that might be a real problem. Yes, the coaches get to sleep too, but that doesn't mean that the coaches cannot take turns monitoring the player rooms for a period after "lights out" to greatly reduce the chances of unauthorized "field trips." There is even the simple trick of placing a strip of Scotch tape with the coaches signature on it on the outside of each room door, with the instruction given to the kids that if they find the "seal" broken in the morning there will be disciplinary action for the room's occupants. No system is fail-safe, but if the coaches didn't even provide the most basic form of supervision once the players were dismissed from team activities each evening that could be grounds for action against them from their school.

I do, I do! :)

They bought their interns down in august for a 10 day bender every year (the future book cookers and trophy wives of America) as a reward

Theses things were usually if not always on the post game reports:

Drain and sanitize pool due to ____ (usually alcohol related)

Significant damage to goods

Public indecency/privacy complaints

Landscaping destruction/defacing (often with articles of clothing and pharmaceutical products)

Oh yeah, a good time was had by ALL. And these are the people who no doubt screw up the oscar envelopes now ;)

Yeah...but Ann Arbor is dull ;)

Lots of crazy stuff happens at wdw for conventions...they allow a good time as much as any. That's my point.

I have little doubt privilege is part of the problem now. And athletics tends to have the coaches give a certain Amount of "leeway" that is often abused

Actually, it's East Lansing.

And before we keep applying the initial "Duke Lacrosse Team" filter to this group, I've known plenty of middle-class Boy Scouts through my years that have engaged in similar after-hours alcohol-related (and worse) antics when given the chance.

Crap!!! I had a 50/50 shot

Yeah, really, this group may have been a little more resourceful, but this isn't exceptional teen behavior. 4-hers, ffa-ers, Girl Scouts, rodeo team, band, etc. The main difference between this and any other group is that the coach messed up somewhere. I really have never been on a group trip where this kind of behavior would have happened for 6 nights in a row. Chaperones can't catch everything, but it's like they weren't even trying here.

I know when I went on a Disney trip in high school (5 years ago now which makes me feel really old) people tried bringing some elicit substances (particularly of the herbal remedies we may say) but I don't know if they were ever successful. All I know is that there is some personal responsibility as a kid to not be a total prude and be respectful for your surroundings which these kids clearly couldn't do

Sounds like an average Wednesday during my college program at Vista way.
