Prejudiced

My parents are SO prejudiced. I am so tired of hearing it. They use phrases and words and names that my kids havent heard. I have asked them not to, and they just keep on. We dont see them often for various reasons but when we do it always happens. Did I really grow up with that???
I guess I did.
I teach my kids to like people or dislike people based on their actions. The good they do, the help they give or with hold... etc.
My parents just don't get it. I bet they think I'm nuts.
How can you raise someone, and then so totally not know them?

Someone in my family (after marriage) was the same way - and it drove me crazy!!! No matter how many times I brought it to their attention - told them how unkind it was - they continued right on..

Some people simply never "get it"..

My ex in-laws were like that.... I asked them repeatedly not to use the language they found common around my kids... They have gotten better, but I know they still talk that way when I'm not around...
Good thing is now, my kids say they are 'ignorant'..

I have to keep reminding myself that they grew up in a different time. Their phrases and comments were what they grew up hearing and it was acceptable. Old habits die hard and as long as they don't talk that way in front of my kids, I can live with it.

On the plus side, I have a boatload of non-racist friends that have very racist parents. That means our kids could be the enlightened generation!

My father was...my Brother is and my 2 sisters....my mother was not ...at all...matter of fact Martin Luther king was my moms Idol.....she marched with him.

I take after my mother and one of the proudest days in my life was when I stood where Martin Luther King stood in Washington DC at the Lincoln monument steps where he gave his "I have a dream speech"....It made me tear...my son was with me and he knew how it made me feel and why....

I remember when the news had the report on TV that he had been killed....I was playing in front of the TV and my Mom heard it and came running down the steps screaming and passed out on the floor.

How this woman could marry someone like my dad is beyond me.

My sister still send me trash on Obama because she knows i am not voting for him.....yet she also knows that I dont want that trash sent to me.....I send it back and tell her to go to snopes.com before sending that stuff to all her friends and family...


I am blessed to take after my mom and so are my children....DH values are the same as mine.

I have some family members like this too. You wouldn't believe the stuff they have said about Sarah Palin and "the Christians".

My dad is pretty prejudiced...he is always talking negatively about "bubuclid," which is generally used to mean white people, but actually means "non-Indian." It's not a "bad" word, but kinda sounds like it when he says it.

Well, you could always video them saying things, then put it on YouTube with their e-mail address and/or phone number.

I often wondered how my mom ended up with my dad, too. Mom was a wonderful loving and tolerant person. Dad was pretty racist, though. He was disappointed in me when I dated an AA guy in college. He told me that white boys would think of me as damaged goods. I remember telling him that anyone who would think such an inane thought wouldn't be someone I'd want to date, anyway, so it was OK.

He'd be 86 years old if he was still living, and was a good, loving and caring man in all other respects. I like to think it was just the times in which he grew up that put these crazy ideas in his head.
