Just found out I am pregnant. I am 6 weeks along and an ultrasound shows its twins. I have a 5 year old and only planned to have 2 children, so I am in TOTAL SHOCK right now, but at the same time realize I am getting 2 wonderful blessings. I had a miscarraige a couple of years ago and the twins are already a little smaller than they are supposed to be so this pregnancy is considered high risk. I am supposed to really take it easy. However, I leave for Disney in 3 weeks. Is it possible to take it easy at Disney? I am just thinking long walks and extreme heat may be a real problem. Anyone else go to Disney with a high risk pregnancy?

I did Disney at 5 1/2 month pregnant. Not necessarily high risk, but 'elevated risk' for preterm labor and told to take it easy (as much as is possible there). I avoided the rides they recommended to (spinning ones, etc). Even the safari, which is not that bad. While hubby went on rides with DD that would spin, I would find a stand, buy a bottle of water and sit on a shady bench and drink it. Actually, the walking and drinking of lots of water is probably a pretty good thing!

Rest when you're tired. And if the heat is bothering you, take a shady break somewhere and let them go do a few rides, or do a show.

It is a lot of walking, but I think it's quite do-able. Have fun!

I went when I was 6 months pregnant with my twins. It was very difficult for me to keep up with everyone, so I just took more breaks and skipped any questionable rides. I had a lengthy discussion with my OB before I went and she said it was ok for me to go - just not to overdo it. Good Luck!!!! Twins are lots of fun!!!

Hey - we were shocked out of our minds when we found out we were having twins also! :)

It was a high risk pregnancy, but I went to Disney when I was almost five months along. Take lots of breaks, rest in the AC when you need to, make sure you drink plenty of water. If walking is getting to be too hard, you can always rent a wheelchair.

Since you're staying on property, would it be workable for you to go back to the room to rest and then meet up with your DS and DH later? That way you could rest when you needed to.

Talk to your OB about it, they may have some other ideas too.

As far as having an older child and then twins, it's totally crazy, but totally worth it. If you need anyone to talk to, or want any other info, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the responses. We have always taken mid-day naps in the roomat WDW, so this time will be no exception. It sounds like this trip will just not be as fast paced as others. I can certainly handle that.

You can definitely take it easy. Sip water frequently, sit in shade when possible, and take afternoon breaks. Walk at your own pace; you're not in a race! LOL. Eat frequent small snacks also. But most importantly: please, please follow the Disney signs about what rides to NOT ride when pregnant. They have those signs for a reason. I have read many people on here say they have ridden rides even when Disney or doctor have said not to, but really, is it worth the risk? Disney will always be there. Those babies are more important. Whew, the end of my soapbox! Sorry, I get carried away, but last time I went to DW I was 11 weeks pregnant, and got made fun of often when I said, "I can't ride that, I am pregnant." I had rather be made fun of than risk health of my baby.

First of all, CONGRATS!

I can totally empathize with your shock at TWINS! It's funny - our "stories" are very, very similar. DH and I found out (last week, at 6w5d) that we're expecting twins, too. I'm due 12-08. After the shock wore off, the excitement began. Oh, and we're leaving for WDW in 3 1/2 weeks, too! LOL We'll be there for two weeks, so I'll be 11 to 13 weeks while we're there. I plan on just taking it easy (easier said than done with a very active 17 month old!) and drinking LOTS and LOTS of water.

Have fun, and congrats again!

Marsha

Congratulations to both of our new twin moms! It can be challenging but very rewarding. Be sure to talk the trip over with your doctor. I had a high risk pregnancy & was scheduled to go to Disney at 7 months & my doctor vetoed it. So I stayed home. It can be done though! Just take it easy, rest often, drink plenty of water and relax.

First of all, congratulations!

Secondly, I took a DCL and WDW trip in January of 05 at 4 months pregnant. I had no pregnancy complications at that time and everything was going great. I came home and a month or so later found out our daughter wasn't growing properly, eventually developed PE and delivered about 2 months early.

Fast forward to today. I am pregnant again and because of last time (and other health issues related to it) I am now high risk and currently 7 months pregnant. We had a Disney vacation planned before I found out I was pregnant, as well as a trip to Key West for a wedding this past December. BECAUSE I had issues last time and because I'm still considered high risk this time, I chose to cancel all vacations and stay close to home.

Talk to your doctor, but for me, my instincts told me to stay put and lay low. Disney will always be there. I would have never forgiven myself if my doctors told me it was fine to travel and then I came home and ended up getting sick or miscarrying. That's just me, though. You'll have to talk with your docs and decide for yourself.

Good luck.

Hi...on our trip a couple of months ago, I was between 8 and 9 weeks pregnant. My pregnancy is not high risk by any means, so my situation may be completely different than yours. However, if it is miscarriage that you are concerned about, my doctor told me that there was very little that I could do to cause or prevent a miscarriage at that point in a pregnancy. I don't know if that makes you feel better or not. I would definitely ask your doctor some very direct questions..."should I go on my trip", "what restrictions should I put on myself", etc.

I will tell you that I was shocked at how tired I was on that trip. I am normally an energizer bunny who will go forever, but there were several days that DH had to put both our 2 yo DD and me down for naps!

If your concerned about the walking, keep in mind that you could always rent a wheelchair or ECV.

Thanks to all of you!!!!

My doctor said I can go, but that I need to use a wheel chair because she does not want me walking more than normal walk around the house. So, that is what I will do. I am trying to figure out in my mind how that is going to work because I normally push our son in a stroller. I guess maybe he can sit in my lap and hubby can just push us around.

Can you park a wheelchair in the stroller sections? Just thinking I don't want to take up wheelchair spaces in shows when there are folks that can not get out of their wheelchair, since I am quite capable of getting out and walking in a show on my own.

Congrats to you too Marsha!!! Yes, our stories are very similar. We are at 7 1/2 weeks now and the babies are now on track. yeah!!!!!

We will be at WDW May 15-21. Maybe we will see you there, I'll be the perfectly healthy person riding in a wheelchair.

Maybe we'll bump into each other! I'll be on the lookout for the perfectly healthy person riding in a wheelchair and you can be on the lookout for the person who looks six months pregnant and (will be) only 11 weeks! LOL (We'll be there from May 18th to June 1st)

Seriously, though. Congrats - I'm so glad the twins are measuring on track now.

Well if you are high risk--you could always rent an ECV to take off some of the burden of walking (or even just a regular wheel chair if the hubby is able to push you).

(and I see you found that out from your doc already).

I used a wheelchair when we went to Hawaii when I had a bleed scare. Approved for travel...not approved for going wild and crazy. I was 16 weeks though.

I used an ECV on my 2nd day at Disney in January...much further along of course..but I could NOT keep up with my group and the effort to even just keep them in eye contact (despite their slow pace) was too much for me. After that I didn't go back until just last week. But of course a world of difference from the time you are going.

Congratulations and enjoy the trip!

Except for shows--most rides will have someone wheel your chair to the exit for you (that I have witnessed).

For shows, I too just parked my ECV among the strollers in a spot that wouldn't be a hinderance when they start readjusting the stroller positions.

The disabilities board might have some tips for you as well.
My mother requires an ECV at Disney and she always parks it for rides and such. (she has to be moving 50% of the time and seated 50% of the time so she is capable of walking into the attraction as well).

Your other option would be an off site ECV rental--I do believe they deliver. Of course it would be more expensive than the free chair you can get at the resort if staying on site (based on availability of course--but you can use it for your length of stay free of charge....the regular wheelchair only though).

With ECV's, noone can ride with you--not sure if they have the same restriction on wheelchairs though.

The wheelchair will only be at the exit if you brought it into the line with you. For the attractions that have moving walkways or those where the regular boarding area is not wheelchair accessible, people with wheelchairs sometimes board at the exit (after waiting in line). That's how the wheelchairs get there.

There is a list link for off-site rental places that rent ECVs and wheelchairs on the disABILITIES FAQs thread (located near the top of the disABILITIES Board).
They all will deliver to your resort.
An advantage of an ECV is that no one would need to push you and you can be more independent. You not needing to be pushed also frees your DH for pushing the stroller (it isn't safe for a child to ride on the ECV with you).

The Disney resorts do have wheelchairs to lend free of charge, but they are first come, first serve and they may not have any available when you get there. The Disney website does mention they may have them, but also suggests if you need a wheelchair, that you rent from off-site.
With ECV's, noone can ride with you--not sure if they have the same restriction on wheelchairs though.
::yes::
For ECVs, either rented from the parks or from off-site, the rental ageement does say that there will be only one person on the ECV and that anyone driving it will be over 18 years.
There is no requirement for wheelchairs, but you have to decide how comfortable you will be with a (possibly squirmy) child on your lap. It could also get pretty hot and there are places where you go up or downhill where it might be hard to hold a child.

I am actually glad to hear I am not the only one. I am 8 weeks now and can only fit in one pair of my regular pants. Is this normal when you are expecting twins? I can not do the rubber band trick on my pants because all my work dress pants zip up the side. I want to delay telling the folks at work all I can, but it is not going to be easy with this big belly of mine. I am hoping to hold off telling until after my Disney vacation, so I just have one more week to go.

I think it's normal with twins. At my OB/Peri appointment last week (I was 8 1/2 weeks), they said my uterus was measuring 14 weeks (instead of 8). I dinstinctly remember starting to "show" with DS when I was 12 weeks so it explains why I'm already in maternity pants. (I've been trying to "hide" with regular tops, but they're getting really tight, too). I admit, I'm scared to death to think what I'll look like at 36+ weeks! LOL

Have fun on vacation! Maybe we'll bump into each other!

I'm NOT going to tell you to go against your OB's orders- after all, he/she is the doctor, but...

There is NOTHING you can do that will prevent a miscarriage if a miscarriage is meant to happen within the first trimester. Using a wheelchair, etc, is a measure doctors employ for your sake of mind- not for the safety of the embryos/fetuses. In fact, I wouldn't even use the wheelchair if I was in your position- when you get tired, rest. Period. Now, if you were going to be in the park during the latter half of your second trimester- with twins- I could definitely see using the wheelchairs, etc. Just not at 9 weeks.

I've had three miscarriages- 9 weeks, 13 weeks, and 8 weeks- so I've been all over the charts in regard to first trimester losses. In the end, there was nothing that I DID nor was there anything I could have done differently that would have prevented our losses- and for the most part, the same can be said about any other woman who has had a first trimester loss.

GL, hon- I hope you have a healthy and happy 9 months and that both of those babes are born safe and sound. :)

YEAH!!!! I don't need a wheel chair!!!!!!!!! Just got back from a fabulous doctor visit. My babies and I are doing wonderful. She said I am doing so great that she thinks I can walk instead of getting a wheel chair. I am sooooo thrilled!!! She just suggested I take it easy, walk slow, and drink water constantly. I can certainly handle that.
