Can you guys help? DH and I are expecting in Sept and I started looking around at some furniture. I found a bed I absolutely love within a reasonable price range, but every website is out of stock and I can't find the bed in any color anywhere.

I did not realize that you could easily spend $700+ on a baby bed. Can you give me some suggestions? How about some online codes or discount websites?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Two words: auction sale.

Find a reputable auctioneer, and haunt the sales. There are often BEAUTIFUL cribs in them (grandparents had one for the grandkids, etc) in them. Then, all you'd need to buy is a new mattress for it, and you're set!

Another option...borrow one from a family member or friend. The crib I used for my firstborn belonged to a friend (and it was gorgeous!), and the crib I used for #2 and #3 was an extra my sister had....her boys were so close together she needed two cribs for a while, then didn't need either.:confused3

Best wishes for you and your baby!

Unless you are planning on having a bunch of kids don't go into hock over something they will only use for 2 years or so. Definitely try to borrow one from someone you know. Spend your $ on a nice dresser set that they will use for years. I also wouldn't worry about a changing table. We always used the floor.

Heck.. my son slept in a pack and play for 9 months 'cause I didn't want to take his sister out of the crib, and I wasn't buying another one. He was fine.

I would be thrilled to lend you my crib that is taking up space in my basement. I'm sure a lot of people would if you just ask around.

I was not comfortable buying a crib from someone I did not know, so that and the carseat was the only things we bought new. High chair, swing, toys, clothes, all were second hand for very little $.

Our crib came from Penney's. Looks like they have 2 cribs on sale now for $150 that would be fine.

Good luck! I know it's exciting, and you want something really nice.. but in a few years it will only be decorating a corner of your storage area.

Or yard sale or Craig's List. Yard Sales are awesome for baby stuff, even for matching furniture.

You probably haven't registered anywhere yet - it would be way to early but depending on where you register some stores will give you a coupon after the registry ends that you can use to buy items on your list not purchased. Or at BRU I think it'll get you on their mailing list and they sometimes have coupons you could use towards the cost of a crib or mattress. I agree with one of the other posters - unless you get a dresser with a detachable changing area on top - it isn't worth the cost. Also I don't know if you have any in your area but around here at least there are a lot of mom-to-mom sales, usually in churches or community centers. Basically moms rent tables and then bring in their stuff to sell to who else - other moms! I haven't been to one yet but my friends have and got some great stuff like an exersaucer, clothes, boppy pillows, etc. at great prices. Good luck!

Check out discount stores like K-Mart, Walmart, and Target for furniture.

I wouldn't buy anything at a yard sale, auction, etc. because cribs and baby stuff are being recalled all the time for safety. Stores get the notices early so they pull them. If something is recalled after you buy it, you will have the paperwork to know if one of the recalls is on the one you have. The stores will post the recalls on their boards for consumers to see, too.

If you buy something at a yard sale etc. you won't know if it has been recalled.

Have you checked the price on diapers or formula yet? There's another shocker!

I spent $500 on a crib for my daughter that will convert from crib to full size bed. I feel it was not that bad a price for something she will most likely use for awhile.

I agree with PP, I would not buy one from a yard sale or borrow a crib that is more than 5 years old because not only do you not know if it is being recalled, but also much older cribs are not as safe. IE the slats are further apart or have things that clothing can get stuck on and hurt a baby.

Along the lines of diapers & formula I would strongly look at one of the warehouse places. In just buying diapers and wipes we made some serious savings over what we had to pay for membership. I go maybe once a month and then I get coupons every other month. So worth it.

I fell in love with a set that Target sold...only to have it discontinued just before I was ready to buy. My store even had one set up as display but refused to sell it to me.

I ended up getting one from Baby Depot at Burlington. Its a beautiful set. The dresser is a changing table combo. We got that & crib for around $600. When your shopping making sure you ask about delivery time. I never thought about that and waited a little too long. They quoted 'up to 12 weeks'... luckily it only took about 5 weeks. Had it taken 12 weeks she would have been sleeping in a pack n play!

Check out Jenny Lind cribs. Around $100, and perfectly fine. Many of my friends used them (see link below.)

I spent about $100 on everything for my baby's room. I bought a friend's crib for $50, and I used my furniture from when I was a kid. I had a student desk, and put a baby changing pad on top of that. You really don't have to spend much. My son still used my dresser, and I took the changing pad off, and now he has a desk as well.

IKEA! I was shocked at how inexpesive their baby furniture is....if I had known I certainly would have gone that route rather than the $$$ spent on a crib that DS didn't even sleep in 3 times! (basinet in our room was easier)

Def. recommend to shop around, I loved some of the furniture out there, however that's how they rack you, they think because 'it's your first' you'll spend the do-re-mi. I have two children that have used the same crib, and it's a $200 model from Toys R Us. It does convert to a full size bed, but we have never used it for that. Right now it's in storage, waiting to see if baby #3 comes along!

Another thing, is PLEASE don't get caught up in the $100+++ crib bedding out there. The whole 'theme' of the room is overrated in my opinion. Right now, there are far better things to spend your money on for baby, than an overpriced bedding set that happens to have John Lennon sketches on it, or cutsie little butterflies. Not saying it shouldn't be pretty or cute, I'm just saying don't put too much emotion into that part of it, it's not worth breaking the bank or charging up the credit cards. And believe me, they will never remember what they slept on the first year or two anyway.

I am a firm believer and lover of the children's resale shops Once Upon A Child. Google that name and see if there are any in your area. They are very reputible, and only stock the best, cleanest items. They buy from moms, gently used EVERYTHING....cribs, changing tables, bassinets, pack & plays, bottles (sterilized by them of course), clothing, blankets, crib bedding, I could go on and on. Even if you need to drive an hour or two (my closest ones are 2 hrs away, I go and make a day of it, visiting all of them in the area) it's worth it. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Babies especially don't outgrow or out-use much of anything, so why pay full price? The shop buys from moms and resells to moms, helping everyone. And when you're done with it all, pack it up and sell it back to them for another wonderful new mother to use! I've always got fair prices and beats a garage sale any day. Best of luck to you and your family!

Totally agree! Plus my daughter is almost 2 years old and doesn't really sleep with a blanket yet, So happy I didn't go crazy on bedding, it would have been wasted. Also you don't need bumpers right away either. Save your money until you need to buy it.

None of my kids slept in a crib. I had one for the first couple, it looked pretty, but we never used it and it was really a waste of space. By the time the last baby came alone I didn't even buy one. We used a pack-n-play and co-sleeper, and all of my babies slept with me. Not saying thats for you, but for now just get a basinette or a pack-n-play until you see what kind of equipment you will really need. Try consignment stores, thats where I got our pack-n-play.

Probably not an option, but I'll throw it out there.....my DH is into woodworking, and he made our DS' crib. It changes to a toddler bed and then one part can be used for a full-size headboard, so it can be used for a long time. Of course, when DS2 came along, he built a bed for DS1, and is now (STILL) working on DS2's matching one so they can have bunk beds.

Other than that, I'd look into resale/garage sale/etc. Babies outgrow things so fast, it's hard to believe.

i got mine at a consignment shop..
i took my 6 year old sons baby clothes and did an even trade..
recalls? its up to the consumer to know if the item is recalled. sometimes walmart. kmart . target dont send them back.
bottom line.. do your homework.

2 Years? My daughter was climbing out of her crib before she was a year old. One good reason not to overspend on a crib.

Our $100 Jenny Lind crib lasted us through 2 kids and 2 moves. It would have been fine for third DD but we got rid of it thinking we were done. When we were surprised and blessed with #3 we bought a smaller "portable" crib. It isn't like a playpen, it is a crib but smaller. We spent about $80 on it and it was fine and actually we liked it more because it took up less space. We decided to hold onto it in case the vacetomy didn't take. I suppose we could get rid of it now, it's been 8 years!

Point is, there are very reasonable options out there, and they are perfectly fine. Good luck and congrats!!!

a little off topic but i thought i would share..
last week i had my husband drag all my sons old stuff out of storage.
the carseat is about 6.5 years old.
looking at it to make sure it was safe.. we found an expiration date!!!
i laughed and told my husband it must be for liability purposes. cant sue the manfacturer after that time..
researching this i found the expire date is stated for the safety of the child the materials start to degrade over time.

DS12 was climbing out of his crib at 11 months.

He then slept in a pack n play for the next year.
