Have you or do you know of someone who got pregnant after their husband had a vasectomy?

How many years was it from the time of the vasectomy?

Just curious how often this might happen?

We are going on 4 yrs since Dh had a vas...no babies here! Praise the Lord!! :rotfl:

Don't know anyone who had one and had it fail, although I'd bet it happens on a very rare occasion. I'm sure that would be huge grounds for a malpractice lawsuit against the performing doctor though. :scared1:.

I know 2 men whom their wives got preggo after vasectomy, although both were military at the time and it was done at the military hospital and you cannot sue the government. :rolleyes1 The first one happened shortly after the surgery. I think he did not wait till the next checkup to see if he still had any "swimmers" and the second one was a few years after the surgery and apparently it was just not done correctly..I still don't understand that one!!!:confused3

I am sure there is some kind of paperwork that gets signed just for that very reason. The dr. performing the surgery would be an idiot this day and age not to have something covering his/her rear end!!

I know of 2. Not sure how many years afterward it was. However, I know of ZERO who had it happen if they properly scanned after the V procedure. I believe you are supposed to go back with a sample like 2 months and then again 6 months afterward - to make sure there is no sperm.

I would believe the # of pregnancies after V would be VERY, VERY low of those who actually go back for the follow-ups.

I don't think we signed any paper work...but we did have to have 2 negative samples before having unprotected intercourse!
We had a -...then a +...so we had to start over and have 2 - back to back!
DH wasn't too happy about that!!!

You can't sign a waiver against gross negligence on the part of the physician, hence why they need the malpractice insurance to cover their rears. I think a botched vasectomy definitely falls under gross negligence. :scared1:

I'd love to see how much therapy the poor child would need after the parents sue for "wrongful birth".....not only were you unwanted, you were so unwanted that we needed big bucks to make us whole for having to have you....:lmao:

It was explained to me before the procedure that a very few individuals have the procedure "reverse" itself..I did have the 30 day check, but not the second that you all mention..I was also told that the procedure is only good for 5 or 6 years at which point is the highest chance for reversal. I dont remember if I signed a waiver, but I would bet i did. He was very clear, over and over, that no vasectomy is 100%. There is no guarantee and this procedure is not intended to be a permanent sterilization. Not as permanent as others would be i suppose, just easier to perform..I would check the natl institue of health (nih) website or even web md on this one.

I totally see what your saying, however I'm just stating a fact...they could be sued. I'm not saying its right on any level. Although, I will say that my DH had a vasectomy 40 years ago. I'm still very capable of getting pregnant if he had viable swimmers...if I did though, I'd be mighty upset at this stage of my life. Would I sue? No, but I don't think everyone feels that way.

You can't sue the doctor. My DH had to sign a paper stating so plus if you go for all your check-ups afterward as the person is supposed to and everything is checked then there will be no chance of pregnancy.

I know of a few. They never went back for the check-ups and got a bonus baby as a suprise.

I also have a neice born to a SIL who had the Essure (or however you spell that) procedure. She did do the check-ups but apparently one got through.

My DS and DBIL are both doctors. You always sign a waiver...as I said though, you cannot waive gross negligence. Malpractice insurance covers cases of gross negligence on the part of doctors. Of course its your job, if you choose to sue, to prove gross negligence. Maybe you live in a state with different laws, but I'm pretty sure this one is universal for all states. If your offended by my assertion, my humble apologies as I certainly am not out to offend anyones sensibilities here. I am in no way advocating suing doctors either, just stating the law as it applies here in NJ and PA.

Just because a vac did not take is not "gross negligence" in itself, there would have to be other circumstances about the procedure as well. Just my two cents.:surfweb:

I know of one. He's 24 now, his older sibling is 32, so somewhere in those 8 years dad had the surgery and it failed. He calls himself the OOPS baby! I have no idea how old he was when he found out about the vasectomy, but he's the family prince because with 3 older sisters, he was their gift. I'm sure that's how he was told.

I've met two. Last summer on a beach vacation a lady and I were talking about the age difference in our children. Her husband had his seven years prior to the birth of their last child. She said the child and mine were angels from heaven--she was right. DH had to sign a release saying he understood the "risk", and the dr. was not liable. He had his nine months after DS2's birth.

This thread scares me! :scared1::scared1:

DH goes soon for his snip and after reading this we will still be proud supporters of the Trojan man.

WE ARE! most of the time, still try to use safe actions after meeting the family last year.:scared1:
A baby is not the worst thing that can happen to a family; but I think we are finished (but I thought I was finished 15 yrs ago.LOL Seven or eight years from DH's vas would put us 48/45. No, thanks.:scared:

Dh has a vasectomy and we have been fine. I know people that have gotten preggo, BUT these were people whose Dh never went back after the surgery to have his counts checked. If it is ascertained that there is no sperm after the 3 month visit, spontaneous reconnection is rare but does happen.I can't remember the % of failure but it isn't all that high. In my Dhs case they nipped, cauterized and clipped with titanium clips. If I happen to still get preggo somewhere down the line than God must have really wanted me to have that 2nd baby!
