Preferred vs. Standard

Quick question - I have 5 of 7 nights reserved in a Deluxe Studio Standard with 2 nights waitlisted. One of the nights I have on the waitlist is open in a Deluxe Studio Preferred - would they actually make us check out of the standard and into the preferred? Or could we request someone else be "pixie dusted" with the preferred studio and let us stay in standard?
