Preakness - Barbaro - OMG!!!

I'm trying to be very hopeful by clinging on to this statement from the story...

"Right now, he's happier," Richardson said. "He's got a normal heart rate, normal temperature, he's eating like crazy. He's very hungry. He's making lots of manure. He looks actually pretty happy today. Now we have to see how he responds to what's going on."

Let's keep our thoughts and prayers going for the big guy! :wizard: :goodvibes

I really hopes he pulles thru this! He has made it so far and done so well, it would be just awful if he doesn't. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and keep him in my prayers!

Oh no, his odds are less than 50%?

I think the most disturbing new development is his abscess in his OTHER hind leg (left). Remember, his shattered leg was the right one.

yeah...I caught that too. This was a concern from the beginning and the reason for the "special shoe".

I'm just hoping they can get the infection and all that under control.

I just heard that, too.

I really can't believe it. I was so upset when the accident first happened. Then after the surgery things were going so well, I really thought he'd be okay.

:(

I feel so bad about this, it breaks my heart
I feel bad I stopped praying for him for awhile.

Everyone did everything they could. I would be very upset if people start second-guessing and playing the Blame Game.

Barbaro should not suffer. I think the vets are absolutely right; if they cannot make him comfortable, it would be the kindest thing to euthanize him . . . :guilty:

:guilty:

Severe laminitis in the other hind leg.

This is sounding even more grim:

Barbaro May Die Due to Foot Inflamation
Doctors Say Barbaro's Life Is at Risk Due to an Inflammation in His Left Hind Foot
by RICHARD ROSENBLATT AP Racing Writer

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. Jul 13, 2006 (AP)— Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has developed a severe case of laminitis, a potentially fatal disease brought on by uneven weight distribution in the limbs, and his veterinarian called his chances of survival "a long shot."

Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon who has been treating Barbaro since the colt suffered catastrophic injuries in the Preakness on May 20, said the Derby winner's chances of survival are poor.

"I'd be lying if I said anything other than poor," Richardson said Thursday at a news conference at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. "As long as the horse is not suffering, we're going to continue to try (to save him).

"If we can keep him comfortable, we think it's worth the effort."

If not, Barbaro could be euthanized at any time. Richardson said if Barbaro does not respond quickly to treatment, "It could happen within 24 hours."

Richardson said the laminitis nearly has destroyed the colt's hoof on his uninjured left hind leg. Laminitis, a painful condition, developed in the past few days. The disease turned more serious in the past day.

"The left hind is basically as bad laminitis as you can have," Richardson said, adding that horses have recovered from laminitis. He said he has discussed the situation closely with owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson.

Richardson said Barbaro's injured right hind leg the one that shattered at the start of the Preakness is healing well, but because a horse has to be evenly balanced, laminitis set in on the other foot.

"We removed a large portion of his (left) foot wall, probably 20 percent of it," Richardson said. "He's in a foot cast with foam padding and antiseptic dressing. We'll see if can regrow his hoof. It will take months and months."

The grim update came after nearly six weeks of a smooth recovery. Barbaro had hours of surgery on May 21 to insert a titanium plate and 27 screws into three broken bones and the pastern joint, and has had two other operations in recent days.

"I really thought we were going to make it two weeks ago," Richardson said. "Today I'm not as confident."

That's how I feel, too. Things looked so good, I just kind of assumed he'd be okay and stopped thinking of it so often. :sad2:

The best thing we can do now is pray. It's a long shot but miracles do happen. It's so heartbreaking when an animal has fought so hard and for so long already.

I'm just not ready to give up hope yet...

Barbaro was a long shot to win the Derby...

He was a long shot to survive the original break...

He's in the best place with the best doctors...

I'm still hoping, I just can't give up hope yet. :guilty:
