Purchased a Canon G7, learning to use, can't find info in booklet on SD card maximum size? Would rather not bring laptop , but then again, I want to see the photos are coming out well.
SDHC vs. SD ( extreme, 11 or 111?)

Mac users, I plan on uploading to iPHOTO... do you install the disk that came with the camera? aka (solution disk)? I've never used the included software before for other digicams.

I Picked up 2 SD cards on sale, how many for 8 days if I am in obsessed mode?
I know, My milage may vary, but dang I can't seem to find the answers in the booklet or on any of the canon powershot sites, or reviews.

Newly obsessed with this site.<G> Terrific tips and help.:dance3:

I looke d and did not find the answer. I am sure someone will reply. How soon do you leave?

Expect to get about 240 images per gig of memory card, assuming that you use the highest quality settings. How many pictures a day do you think you'll take? My sister, not a big Disney fan, shooting film, took about 6 pictures a day. On my most recent trip, I think I took well over 600 pictures a day.

If you have no idea, I'd guess that a typical person that likes photography but isn't insane would take something like 100 pictures a day. So for a 7 day trip, 1 8gig card would just barely be enough. I like to take twice as much memory as I think I'll need.

This assumes that you are just taking pictures. If you are using it for movies, you're going to need much, much, much more memory.

You want to get an SDHC card instead of an SD card if you are buying one bigger than 2 gig.

A faster card will allow you to take bursts of pictures with shorter waits between pictures. It does not help with shutter lag, focusing speed, or any of that. It just means that if you are holding the shutter down and shooting continuously, you'll get more pictures per second than you otherwise would.

It's always good to remember that using bigger cards lets you get more pictures on one card, but you lose more pictures if you lose the card or it gets corrupted. Using smaller cards means changing cards more often, which increases the chances that you lose a card.

Remember that there are a lot of brands out there other than Sandisk!

My "main cards" for the next trip will be a pair of 8 gigs - a Transcend that I got shipped for $35 and a PQI that was $31 shipped. Both are Class 6, which means at least 6m/sec write speed. The Transcend apparently is actually around 14, and I'm not sure about the PQI (no official numbers and I haven't tested it.) I've also got a couple 4 giggers and a stack of 2 giggers. I shouldn't run out on any given day but I wouldn't be surprised if I can fill an 8 gig each day (my average picture size will probably be around 15 megs.)

Either way, your manual should definitely tell you approximately how many photos you can fit on a card of a given size. Your camera itself probably tells you the same number when you put the card in. Only you can determine how many you'll take a day - 100 a day is a ton for some people but nothing for others.

:

You wont have to install anything from canon, i used IPhoto for may last trip with my Canon 870IS and Canon 30D and IPhoto found the camera and transferred all the pictures with no problem. I guess it it wouldnt hurt to just try it once to make absolutly sure it will work, I ended up transfering my photos with the USB cable because I forgot my card reader but in the end everything was fine.

Memory Card Support
In addition to SD and MMC memory cards, the PowerShot G7 supports the new SDHC format for storage capacities of 2GB and upwards. The camera comes supplied with a 32MB memory card.

Thanks everyone... I leave in May 6-13, but like to shop around for best deals<G> and my manual quotes for 32mb, and up to I think a 512mb ... ( does anyone even bother ?). I have a few 1 and 2 gb cards... b/c , like one of you mentioned the chance of corruption / loosing etc, dropping in a cup of coffee.<G>

I generally don't do movies, and think I will take maybe 150-200 photos a day, depending on where I am. ( i am wanting to take lots of flower shots with the festival.... Maybe more... so I will prep for maybe 300 a day to be safe. Taking my laptop , tho I'd rather not. I want to travel light.

So, saying I am taking 300 photos/day at high quality, I should get at least 1 -4gb sdhc card? I find it odd they don't specify how big a card you can use in SC or SDHC in the manual.

Can someone expound on the new SDHC cards.. what is the difference ... shoots faster and downloads faster? I see it probably won't go in my cardreader ( which reads about everything). So I guess i would have to directly download from the camera or get a new dedicated card reader?:woohoo:

I may try some shot of the fireworks, and i generally don't take photos in rides. ( I am disney weirdo I guess .. I like to enjoy the ride and relax... wish they just sold the old view master pix again! LOL)

Also, I just like taking odd photos of disney stuff , as well as the animals .
Thanks so much for your quick suggestions.:woohoo:

SDHC just basically means that it's 4 gigs or larger. HC stands for High Capacity. There are fast ones and slow ones - they're generally rated Class 2, 4, or 6; the higher numbers are faster. Though not all are created the same, I have two class 6 8 gig cards and without testing thoroughly, I'm pretty sure that one is noticably faster than the other.

Thanks, I found a 4gb sdhc with a thing to plug into my computer to download that takes the schd as well as regular sd cards for about $40 online , no shipping. I think it is sandisk, and class 6.
By the time I get all the new camera stuff in my brain, they'll change it all again! <G>
Thanks again:thumbsup2
