Cast:
Me - 38 - Wife, Mommy and slightly geeky automotive test engineer (Yes, I try to duplicate a âÂÂhair raising automotive proving groundâ (to quote the planning video) in a controlled laboratory setting.)
K-man - 38 - Husband, Daddy and another engineer. Overall calming influence on the family.
J-boy - 5 - Son and Chief Whiner. Favorite characters Buzz and Mickey.
The Beast - 2, almost 3 (hooray still free!) - Son and Ornery. His name is Will, but is fondly referred to the Will-da-Beast. Favorite character Pluto.
Pre-Trip
Setting: A snowy Saturday in frozen, cloudy, Ohio.
Me: IâÂÂve got to get someplace warm. Get me out of here!
K-man: OK. Where do you want to go?
Me: I donâÂÂt care as long as itâÂÂs warm there. Anywhere warm and sunny. I canâÂÂt stand winter any longer.
Well, thatâÂÂs how this adventure started. This winter has been so lousy, that we finally broke down and bought a snow blower. When buying a snow blower is the high point of your winter, itâÂÂs a sad, sad thing.
Since K-man is an airline employee, we starting looking at any interline discounts available to him. A 3 or 4 day cruise was first choice, but all looked booked. Bahamas? -- too expensive. Now what??
Disney World? No, not the World. We were there in September (at WL) and had only a so-so time. We were there the same week as Aerobics (still waiting for the next installment of the NASTEE) and Disney Princess. It rained every day, yes, every day. My kids were whiny. I was stressed. This get away was to be relaxing, no stressed Mommy or whining kids allowed! No way!
After discussion, we decided to just resort it, parks only one day. With me promising to relax, not overplan, and just go with the flow. This will be a difficult promise to keep, but I made it. Plus, K-man said that we did need more Mickey soap -- we only had one cake left!
Since this was a primarily resort vacation we wanted either YC or BC to get Storm-Along-Bay. To get the airline discount, we were limited to the March 8 - 12. Sounded good. And as an added bonus, it was J-boyâÂÂs 5th Birthday on the 11th.
K-man made airline reservations, out of an airport about 100 miles away to get the best rate available. He also got car reservations through National -- just in case anything went wrong, theyâÂÂd have an office on property.
Whew! the big plans are out of the way. IâÂÂve promised not to over plan (that was K-manâÂÂs diagnose of the September stress). Can I keep the promise? Well.....no.
I called WDW-DINE to make a few PSâÂÂs, just a few, just one a day, this isnâÂÂt over planning. Really, it isnâÂÂt.
So we got OhanaâÂÂs for the first night with plans to watch fireworks from the Poly beach. Cape May on the second night. TonyâÂÂs for Brunch on Saturday (our park day to use EE in the MK). California Grill for Sunday, with plans to get a sitter from Fairy GodmotherâÂÂs. And Cape May for breakfast the last day.
ThatâÂÂs all I did. Certainly no one would consider that over planning. Would they?? Tell me they wouldnâÂÂt. Right??
After we made the reservations, I realized IâÂÂd be out of town at a technical conference / show for the first 3 days of the week before we left. Yikes! IâÂÂd be on my feet at Cobo Hall in Detroit for 3 days -- and in dress shoes! By Wednesday my feet and legs were tired and sore, plus I had to rush home to do last minute laundry and packing.
Stay tuned to answer the pressing questions:
1. Will my feet give out?
2. Will we accumulate enough Mickey soap?
3. Will my children whine uncontrollably?
4. Will I stress and be unable to relax?
5. Will J-boyâÂÂs B-day be Magical?
6. Will we require the National on-site office?
